Here will be a libary where
Israelis, scholars and students
alike, may study not only their
own history and culture, but
also that of the other peoples
of the Middle East, with whom
we are destined to live. Our
knowledge of their ways and
their group identity will help
us appreciate them as neigh-
bors and as human beings, just
as we expect them to accept us
as friends who can work to-
gether for mutual peaceful
development of the region.
The auditorium and the
meeting rooms of this unique
complex are already in use. In
recent weeks, a conference was
held here on methods of ad-
vancing democracy in Israel,
with Prime Minister Shimon
Peres as principal speaker.
Another gathering, attended
by architects from throughout
the country, was devoted to a
study of "Memorials in Is-
rael," the forms they take and
the functions they perform.
The project has been con-
structed and is being admini-
stered by a publicly registered,
non-profit and independent
organization composed of
leading citizens drawn from all
walks of life. Former military
officers, now distinguished
civilians, are prominent among
them.
The casual visitor may study
the list of names and wonder
about the dramatic tale behind
each entry. Families of those
memorialized may find here, at
last, a recognition which had of
necessity been denied their
loved ones in their lifetimes.
And the thoughtful observer
may pause once again in the
fifth patio, the one which
serves as the hoped-for thres-
hold to peace, and consider
that here is to be found elo-
quent expression of the over-
riding goal and the ultimate
purpose of Israel's military
establishment.

rition, emotional impairment of

planning for the future.
