Haifa—Our sages have pro-
claimed that one of the highest
forms of philanthropy is the
contribution given anonymous-
ly. There is a contribution still
higher in the scale of values,
that of a person who gives his
life anonymously for a noble
cause. Israel has had more
than its share of these un-
known heroes, operating with-
in the framework of the under-
cover intelligence community.
Only a few of them have had
their stories told, like Eli
Cohen, who was hanged in
Damascus Square in 1965, or
Dr. Morris Marzuk, the Kar-
aite physician, who was
hanged by the Egyptians in
1954. The others rendered
their service incognito, un-
known in life and not honored'
in death.
This historic injustice is now
being corrected with the con-
struction of a memorial where
the names of 360 of these
previously unknown heroes are
at last revealed. Appropriate-
ly enough, the funds for the
memorial are being given by
anonymous donors who, in
respect for the memory of the
hitherto nameless heroes, have
waived all plaques and-credits
on the building. The only
names which appear are those
who served their homeland,
and in their lifetimes received
no medals, no honors, no
plaques.
The structure, located just
outside Tel Aviv, is unique in
several respects. Though born
from war, it is dedicated to
peace. Its name, the Center of
Special Studies, does not do
justice to its proposed func-
tions, in which library, audi-
torium, meeting rooms and
similar facilities will be utilized
in an ongoing program for the
preservation and advancement
of democracy in Israel in the
broadast sense.
The memorial aspect of the
institution takes the form of a
series of outdoor patios built
like a maze. There was mys-
tery in the life and death of
these fallen warriors, and the
labyrinth of alcoves symbol-
izes this aura of unknown, each
path leading around a stone
wall corner to still another
unknown destination. Is there
no exit, no future, no end? The
persistent visitor finds his way
out at last. The final alcove
bears the name "Chevlei
Shalom," pangs of peace. This
is the destination, this the
desired goal, this the cause for
which Israelis are compelled to
fight.
The architecture and the
labyrinth are symbolic, for the
memorial emphasizes life and
continuity. Here is a place for
Israel's youth to gather and to
sing songs of the homeland.
Here, "patriotism" will not be
a dirty word, sullied by those
who have converted self-deni-
gration into an avant garde
"liberalism."
