THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 20, 1985

Brooklyn, involved with his par-
ents, his Uncle Abe the gangs-
ter, and his wife and family.
Through the twists of fate,
David becomes a murderer and
disappears from Brooklyn. Nine
years later we find him as
Aaron Levin, an architect with
a new family in a far-off small
university town. He thinks that
he is safe from his past, but an-
other twist of fate forces him to
confront both of his lives.
Damaged Goods by Thomas
Friedman (The Permanent
Press). America was in turmoil
in 1969, with the shadow of Viet
Nam over everything. But no
one was in more turmoil than
Jason Kole of Brooklyn. An
amusing story that will bring
back memories for many
readers.
Goldkorn Tales by Leslie Eps-
tein (E.P. Dutton). This collec-
tion of three short stories is as
irreverent a book as the reader
will ever rush through. The
stories move quickly, held up
only momentarily while the
reader translates an over-
abundance of yiddish ex-
pressions.
Inside, Outside by Herman
Wouk (Little, Brown and Com-
pany). Everything you have
come to expect from Herman
Wouk you will find here. The
"Inside" in the title refers to
family, faith and tradition. The
"Outside" is the American
dream and the entire jarring
world outside the home. The
novel sweeps 60 years from
Europe to the Bronx, with a
touch of show biz; from Wash-
ington, D.C. to Israel.
Someday the Rabbi Will Leave
by Harry Kemelman (William
Morrow). The religious problem
in this tale about the adven-
tures and misadventures of a
conservative rabbi in a small
town in Massachusetts is about
the upcoming marriage of the
temple president's daughter to a
non-Jew. The detective side is
about a hit-and-run accident in-
volving a teenage neighbor.
The Image and Other Stories
by Isaac Bashevis Singer. (Far-
rar, Straus & Giroux). Singer
writes about people — little
people, ordinary people — yet
the stories are different and
entrancing. The settings range
from Eastern Europe of a
bygone day to Polish cities, New
York's lower East Side and
Upper West Side.
The Keeper of the Walls by
Monique Raphel High. (De-
lacorte Press). Love conquers
everything, and true love never
runs smoothly. The story follows
Lilly Bruisson, the toast of
Pai-is, from the high life of
society. to hiding in the coun-
tryside during the Nazi occupa-
tion.
The Marburg Chronicles by
Alfred Coppel (E.P. Dutton).
This is a multi-generation saga.
The epic goes on for several
generations, ranging from Ger-
many to Spain, to the eastern
United States during the Civil
War, and then on to California
and Mexico.
