tion crop seemed to fall into two
extremes. There were a large
number of routine stories, with
little plot or characterization to
attract attention; and a small
number that were captivating.
Those few good books had
many themes, and their excel-
lence was not related to their
length. There were short stories,
and short-story collections, as
well as a number of novels.
Following is a minyan of fic-
tion with Jewish themes, in
