Goodfellow Fund:
Stutz Leadership
It should be noted that
\ Leonard Simons has been sig-
nally honored for his contribu-
tions to Wayne State Univer-
sity, with emphasis on Wayne
State University Press. As the
initiator of the WSU Press
Board of Advisors, he has just
been honored and a room has
been named for him in the press
building which already is the
Leonard N. Simons WSU Press
Building. He has been accorded
similar recognition at Brandis
University, and both univer-
sities have benefited from his
personal gifts of many
thousands of books and the
philanthropic support he super-
vised for both.
It should be noted that Si-
mons has many roles, that he
keeps inspiring many benefac-
tions, that he had a share in
encouraging the magnificent gift
of $1,000,000 to the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts by the Prentis
family. The South Court of the
area of the Art Institute has
been renamed the Beverly J.
Prentis Court. It is the largest
gift ever given by any family to
the Art Institute. It is one of the
many achievements to the credit
of L.N.S. and his major role now
earns for him the title Jewish
Historian Leonard N. Simons.
It has never been advertised
as such, and shouldn't be, that
the meritorious Goodfellow
Fund had an impressive alle-
giance from a special Jewish
community battalion.
For many years, prominent
Jews were known among the ac-
tivists in securing the important
Christmas funds to aid needy
children.
It will be recalled that emi-
nent men like David A. Brown
risked the severest weather for
many years to occupy downtown
Detroit corners in quest of
funds.
This year, as in the past four
decades or more, George Stutz
was a major activist, a vice
president of the sponsoring fun-
draising movement, again in the
front line in support of the
worthy cause.
Still among the activists in
Jewish Welfare Federation and
Allied Jewish Campaigns, per-
haps the Elder Citizen among
them, a Butzel Award winner,
George earns the admiration he
gained anew in the current
Goodfellow Fund sponsorship.
His appeal will surely be heard
for supplementation of the
shortcomings, due to the incle-
ment weather, in the amount
raised this month.
