The Merkez, the Layman's
Association of the Vaad
Horabonim, announces its fifth
annual melave malka will take
place on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. at the
main Jewish Community Cen-
ter.
Guest speaker will be Rabbi
Berel Levy, kashruth adminis-
trator of the O.K. Laboratories,
an organization which super-
vises and certifies food product
companies throughout the world
such as Kraft Foods, Post Cere-
als, Hunt-Wesson, General
Foods Coffees.
The Merkaz assists the Vaad
in retaining a full time kashrut
administrator to oversee super-
vision of products, caterers, and
kosher food establishments. The
kashrut research for the com-
mercial concerns is made avail-
able to all kosher consumers
through KosherGram, a news
bulletin which has more than
10,000 subscribers in 45 states
and seven foreign countries in-
cluding Israel.
The Merkaz also provides
educational materials and pro-
grams to local day schools and
presents forums with national
Kashrut authorities to the De-
troit Jewish community.

Freda Keet, one of Israel's
foremost broadcasters, will be a
guest speaker of the Business
and Professional Women of the
Jewish Welfare Federation at 6
p.m. Thursday in the home of
Shirley Loewenthal.
The $100 Section dinner is
held on behalf of the 1986 Allied
Jewish Campaign.
Born in Rhodesia, Keet was
educated at Cape Town Univer-
sity, and became the first an-
nouncer on Rhodesian radio.
Keet has been living in Israel
since 1963. A dedicated Zionist,
she is considered one of Israel's
most knowledgeable authorities
on its role in Africa.
Sally Levy is $100 Section
chairman, and Pam Sorock is
associate chairman. Linda Klein
serves as chairman of the Busi-
ness and Professional Women's
Division.
