Guide Stabbed
In Old City

Jerusalem (JTA) — A Jewish
tour guide was stabbed in the
Old City Nov. 25. It was the
third such attack in November
despite beefed up police patrols.
The victim, Baruch Jihan, 33
was hospitalized for what were
described as medium to light
wounds in his arm and temple.
Fifty suspects were detained for
questioning.
Jihan, employed by the Mt.
Gilo Field School south of
Jerusalem, and another guide,
Yael Segal, were on the Via
Dolorosa mapping a walking
tour for a group of teachers
studying at the school. As they
approached the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre, his companion
screamed and Jihan turned to
see a young Arab come up be-
hind him with a knife.
Later he told police, "I held
his arm but he was very strong
and he kept tryina to stab me.
At one point I hit b him twice in
his jaw but he kept on fighting.
Eventually he managed to
scratch me at my left temple."
At that point, Jihan said, the
assailant fled. He pulled out his
pistol and fired at him once but
missed.
Jerusalem police commander
Haim Albades said police
patrols have been increased in
the Old City but there was no
way to ensure maximum secu-
rity.

Spain Denies
Arab Report

New York (JTA) — The
Spanish government has denied
a report published last week
that Spain has decided to post-
pone the establishment of for-
mal diplomatic relations with
Israel, the World Jewish Con-
gress disclosed last week.
According to the WJC, Am-
bassador Manuel Sassot, the
Spanish Consul-General in New
York, assured WJC Executive
Director Israel Singer during a
private meeting that there will
be no delay of any kind in the
establishment of formal ties.
Wire services reported on No-
vember 29 said that Jorge De-
zcaller, Spain's Director General
of Foreign Policy for the Middle
East, told officials in the United
Arab Emirates that Spain would
postpone the announcement of
full ties with Israel until at
least October, 1986.
Sassot told the WJC that offi-
cials of the United Arab Emi-
rates apparently released the
inaccurate story in order to pre-
pare their countrymen for what
the Arab officials view as the
inevitability of Spain-Israel ties.
The WJC also said it learned
that Spanish security officials
have visited their embassies in
the Middle East to make final
preparations for the establish-
ment of formal relations be-
tween Spain and the Jewish
State.
