Hijacking Toll Hits 60
As Israeli Woman. Dies
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Nitzan
Mendelson, shot Nov. 24 by the
hijackers of Egyptair Flight 648,
died Sunday at a hospital in
Valleta, Malta.
Mendelson, a member of Kib-
butz Hulata in Galilee, never
regained consciousness after she
was shot in the head. She had
been pronounced clinically dead
at the hospital where she was
kept breathing by machine. Her
death brought to 60 the number
of fatalities resulting from the
hijacking.
In Washington last week, the
United States announced that it
is offering a $250,000 reward for
information leading to the cap-
ture of Abdul - el-Abbas, the
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion official believed to have
masterminded the hijacking of
the Italian liner Achille Lauro
Oct. 1
State Department deputy
spokesman Charles Redman
said the reward is for Abbas and
any others not yet in custody"
who were responsile for the
hijacking in which 14 Ameri-
cans were held hostage and one
of them, Leon Klinghoffer, was
murdered. He stressed that the
information must lead to the
prosecution and conviction of
Abbas.
Abbas, a close advisor of PLO
chief Yasir Arafat and head of
the Palestine Liberation Front
(PLF), the group that hijacked
the liner, was aboard the Egyp-
tian plane with the terrorists
who hijacked the ship, which
the U.S. forced to land in Italy.
The Italian government allowed
him to leave the country even
though the U.S. sought his ex-
tradition. Since then Italy has
issued warrants for his arrest.
While government officials
are not eligible for the reward,
anyone else can provide the in-
formation to the FBI or the
State Department's diplomatic
security service in the U.S., or
the nearest U.S. Embassy
abroad, Redman said.
In other news, a report issued
Monday by the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith revealed
that the Palestinian Liberation
Organization and other Palesti-
nian terrorist groups have car-
ried out terrorist actions
throughout the world on an av-
erage of once a week since 1982.
The report, "PLO and
Palestinian-Inspired Terrorism,
1982-1985: The continuing Re-
cord of Violence," cites and de-
scribes terrorist incidents and
victims since the 1982 expulsion
of the PLO from Lebanon.
Fire Ruins Arab Unit's
Washington, D.C. Office
fimWashington (JTA) —
Arson is suspected in a blaze
that raged through two adjoin-
ing buildings containing the
Washington offices of the
American-Arab anti-
Discrimination Committee and
other tenants last Friday night.
The fire marked the third
time in four months that U.S.
offices of the committee have
been the target of violence. The
most serious incident occurred
on Oct. 11 when a bomb
exploded at the Santa Ana,
Calif. office killing Alex Odeh,
41, the committee's regional di-
rector.
Only the day before he had
appeared on a television inter-
view program where he denied
that the Palestine Liberation
Organization and its chief, Yas-
sir Arafat, were responsible for
the Achille Lauro hijacking.
An explosion ripped the com-
mittee's office in Boston Aug.
16, injuring a policeman. There
were no injuries in Friday
night's fire but damage to the
committee's offices alone are es-
timated at $450,000. Ray Alford,
a spokesman for the Washing-
ton, D.C. fire department told
reporters, "There's too much
there for it to be accidental but
not enough to declare it arson so
we are classifying it at the pre-
sent time as suspicious."
James Zogby, former execu-
tive director of the committee,
said the fire was not accidental.
"We've seen too many for it not
to be a pattern. At this point its
too many times," he said.
The FBI reportedly suspects
Jewish Defense League in-
volvement in the fatal Santa
Ana bombing but so far no one
has been charged and no arrests
have been made. JDL national
chairman Irving Rubin, who de-
nied responsibility for the bomb-
ing, also denied that JDL was
involved in the Washington fire
though the authorities have not
suggested it was.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles
police bomb squad safely dis-
armed a primed explosive device
found on the steps of the Masjid
al-Mumin Mosque near
downtown Los Angeles last
Thursday. It was discovered by
congregants arriving for wor-
ship.
New Evidence
In NY Case
Jerusalem(JTA) — A photo-
graph of a boy resembling Etan
Patz, who disappeared six years
ago near his home in New York
City, appeared in a Rumanian
newspaper in Haifa, leading
some to believe that he was-
kidnapped, brought to Israel and
may be living with an Orthodox
Jewish family.
The photo identified the
youngster as Eitan Ben-Haim
and the editors of the newspaper
say they do not know who sent
them the photo. Police, along
with the FBI, are checking all
families with that name but so
far have come up empty-handed.
