U.S. Remains
Firm On PLO

Jerusalem (JTA) — Reports
that the United States is soften-
ing its position on contacts with
the Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization — vigorously denied in
Washington last week — have
touched off a new controversy in
the Labor-Likud coalition gov-
ernment.
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir "strongly objected" to
any such change, a spokesman
for, the Likud leader said last
Tuesday.
Likud sources claimed that a
statement by Premier Shimon
Peres at a closed door briefing of
the Knesset's Foreign Affairs
and Security Committee, im-
plied Israeli endorsement of the
allegedly softer American stance
toward the PLO.
According to Likud, the U.S.
now requires only three condi-
tions for PLO participation in
the peace process — acceptance
of UN Security Council resolu-
tions 242 and 338, abandonment
of terrorism, and readiness to
negotiate with Israel.
This, Likud says, is a change
relative to the 1975 commitment
by Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger that the U.S. would
have no dealings with the PLO
until it publicly recognizes Is-
rael's right to exist — in addi-
tion to the other conditions.
The State Department said
last week that there has been no
change in conditions it has set
for the last ten years that the
PLO must meet before the
United States will recognize it.

Dershowitz
Cites Dangers

New York (JTA) — Harvard
Law School Professor Alan Der-
showitz said in New York last
week that the greatest danger
facing the Jewish community
today is found in the extreme
movements of the radical left
and the Christian right.
"Although they are all rooted
in the same primitive strain,
unless we recognize their key
differences, we will fail to apply
the specific remedies to counter
each one," Dershowitz told the
500 persons gathered Nov. 17 at
Young Israel of Boro Park, less
than one block from the shop-
ping district where 13 Jewish-
owned stores were vandalized
one week earlier. He described
the Boro Park vandalism as "the
disturbing, but not very
threatening act of fringe char-
acters who enjoy widespread
support in our society."
Instead, Dershowitz, a native
of Boro Park and who attended
the Young Israel synagogue
there as a youth, expressed
great alarm at "the newest
strain of anti-Semitism which
calls itself "anti-Zionism," but
which employs all of the classic
anti-Semitic blood libels, and
which is being promoted by an
insidious
coalition of the ex-
/
treme right and the extreme
left."
