Rabbi Answers
Jews In Cults

BY RABBI RUBIN R. DOBIN
(-' Special to The Jewish News

We are very much concerned
that our nineteen-year old daugh-
ter is becoming involved with a
cult group. How can we find out if
the group is really a cult? — M.L.C.,
Palo Alto, Calif.
Generally, there are ten out-
, standing characteristics of a de-
structive cult group. A cult is led
\ by a charismatic and
authoritarian leader. It demands
blind allegience and total obedi-
' ence. It has little or no connec-
tions with organized religions or
accepted faiths. The cult assumes
full control of an individual's
mind and actions. It also calls for a
I\ break with previous family and
social relations. It limits use of
free will and personal movement.
The cult recruits through inno-
\_ cent, deceptive and unsuspecting
entrapment. It calls for personal
resources to be turned over to the
group. The cult consistently uses
every aspect of demagoguery. It
places undue emphasis on the
devil and the demonic.
A nephew of mine has become
_ friendly with a group of young
people at his place of work. They
are trying to convince him that
only by accepting the divinity of
Jesus can a Jew become a complete
Jew. — G.W., Chicago.
Unfortunately, too many Jews
are becoming confused by the de-
ception and claptrap that is being
passed around by the Jews for
Jesus and similar missionary
groups. A Jew cannot accept the
divinity of Jesus and still remain
a Jew. The trickery and sweet talk
can easily fool the naive and inno-
cent Jew, who does not have a
strong identity bond with his
faith.
I am sending you some simple
reading material that I hope you
will give to your nephew. If he '
wants to, your nephew can write
to me about his doubts and I will
correspond with him.
I am having a running argu-
ment with some friends of mine
- who insist that the Mormon
Church and Jehovah's Witnesses
are cult groups. — A.L., Dallas,
Tex.
As far as Jews are concerned,
these two religious organizations
are dangerous missionary groups.
- In all honesty, I cannot classify
them as destructive cult groups.
They are destructive enough for
us because they are very firm and
--- determined in their missionary
approach to Jews. These sects and
others like them want to draw
Jews into conversation and
- argumentation with them. They
are trained to turn any contact
into a direction of agreement with
them. Our best advice is to thank
them for their blessings and show
them the door.
My 28-year-old daughter has
been a member of the Baghwan
Rahjneeh cult for ten years. We
have tried to get her out a number
of times, but with no success. We
have maintained contact with her
all through the years, and she has
tried to bring us into the cult group
on a number of occasions. She tells
us that at least 50 percent of the
Rahjneesh cult are former Jews. Is
