Hertel (D-14th) and Sander Levin
(D-17th). "Quite a turnout,"
whispered a veteran Washington
observer. "I'm impressed."
Most of the officials spoke only
briefly before running upstairs to
vote on pending legislation. Sen.
Riegle stayed the longest, speak-
ing out forcefully against the pro-
posed .U.S. arms sale to Jordan,
which he called "extremely
dangerous" and the Gramm-
Rudman bill designed to balance
the budget by 1991, which he said
has "hideous complications."
Riegle pointed out that Sen.
Gramm put together a "disastr-

of the room asked Crockett his
position on the Jordan arms sale.
He said he opposed it, as he op-
poses all foreign aid. And then he
was gone.
The exchange between audi-
ence and speaker was far more
lively at the State Department,
where a young Mideast staffer
named Dave Sadderfield
staunchly defended the Adminis-
tration's proposed Jordan arms
sale, arguing that it is part of an
overall plan to strengthen moder-
ates in the region. He insisted
that the sale would not affect Is-
rael and that Jordan would never
use the 'sophisticated weaponry
against the Jewish state. Most in
the audience disagreed with his
positions — he also maintained
