I know I'm not the most popular member of the Michigan delegation," said Crockett, who has been more aligned with the Arabs than Israel over the years. In lieu of a formal statement, he spoke of his "many Jewish friends," including his four best friends. He then offered to take questions. There was a long si- lence before someone in the back of the room asked Crockett his position on the Jordan arms sale. He said he opposed it, as he op- poses all foreign aid. And then he was gone. He was one of about a dozen members of the group who took part in the daily silent vigil held across the street from the Soviet Embassy during the noon hour. It was a moving experi- ence," he said, "and I thought of my grandparents coming over from Russia." William Keyserling of the Na- tional Conference of Soviet Jew- ry's Washington office told the Detroiters that despite the persis- tent rumors of an impending breakthrough, the fact remains that emigration is at a standstill and the persecution of refuseniks continues. "Until the numbers change, our campaign can't change," he said.
