Dr. Steven Cohen
Dr. Steven Cohen, professor of
sociology at Queens College,
N.Y., will address the profes-
sional staff institute of the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
its member agencies, on Dec. 4
at the main United Hebrew
Schools building.
The institute presents an
opportunity for communal work-
ers to hear stimulating ideas
and discuss issues in American
Jewish life that will strengthen
their understanding of the
community they serve.
Entitled "Is There a Crisis in
the American Jewish Family?"
the program will focus on the
challenges of intermarriage,
family stress and the changing
patterns of Jewish identity.
Author of the recently pub-
lished book, American Moder-
nity and Jewish Identity, Cohen
received his B.A. and Ph.D. de-
grees from Columbia University.
A former visiting professor at
Hebrew University, Cohen is
co-director of the Greater New
York Jewish population study
and was in Detroit recently to
address Federation's Commis-
sion on Jewish Identity and Af-
filiation.
Roundtable discussions will
follow Cohen's remarks, and
Federation Executive Vice
President Wayne L. Feinstein
will deliver concluding com-
ments.
Renee Wohl, director of the
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies, is chairman of the pro-
fessional staff institute. Mem-
bers of the 1985-1986 planning
committee are: Arlene Goldberg,
Jewish Family Service; Marty
Oliff, Jewish Community Cen-
ter; Renee Mahler, Jewish Fed-
eration Apartments; Dr. Gerald
Teller, United Hebrew Schools;
