J JEWELRY APPRAISALS
THE
JEWISH NEWS?
a compulsory program for every
child from first grade through
high school that pushes man-
datory meetings with Arab chil-
dren. Jewish students visit Arab
villages and stay -over the
weekend. Arabs make return
visits to Jewish neighborhoods.
, The Ministry even sponsors joint
summer camps."
The controversial MK, who
spoke off-the-cuff, cited figures
of 3,500 Jewish women married
to Arabs in Israel and another
10,000 racially mixed couples
who were co-habitating. His re-
marks were also peppered with
attention-getting statements
like "Every prostitute in Israel
is Jewish and the pimps are all
Arabs."
In an interview with The
Jewish News Thursday after-
noon, Kahane said most Jews in
Israel are "closet supporters" of
his goals and that in their
hearts, they know the Arabs liv-
ing in the Jewish State pose a
great danger to them. He
claimed current polls show his
militant Kach Party taking
some 10-12 Knesset seats if
elections were held now.
(Kahane, who was elected to the
Israeli parliament in 1984, is
the party's only current repre-
sentative.)
The Kach leader said he finds
it especially hard to impart his
views on American Jews since
they tend to favor a melting-pot
approach to racial problems.
"The Jew in America is a prod-
uct of this country and so his
values are Western values —
which are basically gentile val-
ues," Kahane said during the
interview. "So when I come and
promote these Jewish values, he
is shocked. He really and truly
doesn't believe my values are
Jewish values because the lead-
> ers in his community don't push
- my viewpoint."
Kahane said Israelis, particu-
larly the Sephardim, are more
receptive to his philosophy. "I
don't have problems getting my
views across except when the
leftists — who are mostly
Ashkenazim with European
values — come in and try to
break up our rallies. That's not
a problem of me reaching
people. That's a problem created
by left-wing facism."
Among the Kahane supporters
who attended the program,
there were many who thought
his opinions, while somewhat
radical, added balance to the
Mideast debate. "He's not our
emeny," an Ann Arbor women
said, "He's an important person
to have around. He offers a
different perspective on things
and he should be allowed to
voice his views."
Others in the crowd, like
Glenn Gayer of Farmington
Hills, were strictly opposed to
the Kach leader's goals and
seemed to show up more out of
curiousity than anything else. "I
don't believe in his policies,"
Gayer said. "He's not a very
tolerant man. But I saw him on
60 Minutes and wanted to see
him in person."
