Selection of Yael Dayan as a
new choice for the Detroit
Jewish Book Fair opening—a
decision advancing the Nov. 9
formal opening—lends special
significance to the Nov. 7 date
chosen for Yael's appearance
here. The priority accorded her
relates specifically to her latest
book, My Father, His Daughter
(Farrar Straus and Giroux).
The new Yael Dayan book
merits attention as an
addendum to Israel's history,
her wars, her military leaders.
The major attention is on the
late Moshe Dayan, the general,
the personality with a strong
influence upon Jews everywhere
and not necessarily only his fel-
low Israelis, the archeologist—
and the womanizer.
It is because of the latter role
that My Father, His Daughter
attracts so much attention.
Yael's own story is her own,
and her father's links the two in
many Israeli and world Zionist
actions. It is a story of devotion
and it contrasts with the
negatives—with a protest gen-
erated over the disinheriting of
his children and the bequea-
thing of all, quite a fortune and
the valuables assembled by a
man who became a famous ar-
cheological digger.
What about Moshe Dayan the
womanizer, that role never hid-
den?
Indeed, that characteristic
was a matter of record and some
sought to make it a national is-
sue. The late David Ben-Gurion
stood by his friend and associate
in his government.
Approached on the subject,
Ben-Gurion, as Yael Dayan
states in her intimate story,
"drew a distinction between
man's intimate life and his pub-
lic responsibilities.
Yael's personal tribute to her
father, "he was destined to be a
national leader, and his record
in bed was not going to stand in
his way."
Thus it is clear that Yael
never deviated from her admira-
tion for her father. That's her
father-daughter story with its
immense frankness.
