Tel Aviv (JTA) — Over half of
an estimated 7,000 soldiers con-
sidered deserters — most of
whom had failed to report for
reserve duty when caller up —
voluntarily turned themselves
in at IDF depots during a just-
completed two-week space
period.
Of the 4,000 surrendering
deserters, 362 have already been
sent to prison following trials,
350 are now awaiting trial, and
others were fined. Some 250
were forgiven because of medi-
cal and other social reasons.
The deserters who gave them-
selves up had apparently be-
lieved, when the appeal for
them to surrender was first
made by the authorities, that
they would be pardoned if they
turned themselves in during the
two-week period. The IDF
Command, denying they had
promised the deserters amnesty,
said they had merely indicated
that soldiers found to be des-
erters after the two-week space
period ended would be subject to
severe disciplinary measures.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Four people
were injured, one of them seri-
ously, when two bombs exploded
last week in the crowded veget-
able market in the Emek town
of Afula.
Doctors at the Afula hospital
where the victims were taken
,paid a 65-year-old woman sus-
tAfin e d a fractured skull. She
was later transferred to a hospi-
tal in Haifa.
Two others were sent home
after first aid treatment and the
fourth victim remained in the
Afula hospital for treatment.
Police closed the market area
while they searched for other
possible explosive charges, and
security forces detained for
questioning a number of Arabs
found in the vicinity. Police said
the bomb appeared to have been
planted by terrorists.

Nazi Files
Destroyed
Toronto (JTA) — Immigration
Minister Flora MacDonald has
ordered an investigation into
the destruction of several
hundred thousand government
files containing evidence the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(RMCP) had on hand in prep-
aration for action to de-
naturalize Nazi war criminals
as a prerequisite for their depor-
tation by Canada.
MacDonald acted last week
after former Solicitor General
Robert Kaplan testified at a
hearing of the Deschenes Corn-
mission, which is conducting an
inquiry into Nazi war criminals
living in Canada, about the mis-
sing files and their significance.
The files in question consisted
of 206 yards of case records at
the Immigration Department
comprising immigration forms
in use after World War II along
with results of security screen-
ings of immigrants.
