The new community-wide
Commission on Jewish Identity
and Affiliation, in Professor
Gerald Bubis' words, represents
a call to arms. At their inau-
gural meeting recently, the pro-
fessor of Jewish communal
studies urged commission mem-
bers to explore ways in which
Detroit's agencies and organiza-
tions can motivate Jews to ac-
tion and involvement as Jews.
The commission, headed by
Jewish Welfare Federation' Vice
President David Page, was ap-
pointed by Federation President
Joel D. Tauber. He announced
its formation at the annual
meeting of Federation in Sep-
tember.
Representing a cross-section of
communal involvement, the 45
members have been asked to
assess the challenges posed to
the community by demographic
changes, to identify ways in
which Federation and its agen-
cies might respond to the issues
raised and to find those areas
where they can work together
with other organizations having
the same concerns about iden-
tity and affiliation.
