for City Council for the first
time eight years ago, he found
one predominantly-Jewish pre-
cinct where only two percent of
the population turned out at the
polls.
He sees the problem, however,
as not one of apathy, but rather
lack of self-motivation. He sees
Jewish citizens motivated about
politics on the national and
state levels and even on "the
grass roots level" — their own
subdivisions, under "more com-
fortable" and familiar surround-
ings. Jews are getting involved
only when they perceive that
they are directly affected, he
said.
Marks sees more Jewish polit-
ical involvement in Southfield
and Oak Park because Jews are
not minorities in those areas.
"Because w e're not the major-
t-- : ity here (in Farmington Hills),
I maybe there is an uncomforta-
L, bleness about becoming in-
volved," he said.
"I think it's just ... a feelng
of 'We don't have that much im-
pact in this community, so why
work at it."'
Marks said one solution to
i this self-motivation problem
‘,---, would be for Jews to simply look
at history and the important
roles they have played in other
communities. "In every commu-
nity we have been to, the Jew
has left his mark." He suggests
that if there is an increase in
Jewish voters, then perhaps
other groups will follow.
"We have always been the
leaders." Other groups can look
at Jewish leaders, such as Carl
and Sander Levin, and Jewish
citizens becoming involved and
say, "if he can do it, I think I
can do it too," Marks said. "We
can act as an example ...
I C Jewish people can be elected.
Jewish people can co-exist with
other ethnic groups for the bet-
terment of the community ... It
begins at the grass roots level."
Summing up his perception of
the problems with Jewish and
non-Jewish citizens desiring the
benefits of local representation,
yet not turning out to vote,
Marks used an old quotation
from "one of our very famous
and well-known politicians," De-
troit Mayor Coleman Young.
"Everybody wants to go to
heaven, but nobody wants to
die," he said.
Marks said he is challenging
this attitude and "looking for
people to say, `I'm giving myself,
I'm going to put something back
into this community."'
