An Oak Park rabbi and part-
time gem dealer was reported
missing last week when he
failed to show, up for an ap-
pointment in Louisville, Ky.; to
buy jewels. The- rabbi's aban-
doned car was found by police
Monday in a run-down Cincin-
nati neighborhood.
Shmuel Betsalel, a rabbi serv-
ing Young Israel of Oak Woods
and a teacher at Akiva Hebrew
Day School, was reported mis-
sing by relatives last Thursday
after he failed to call home from
Louisville as expected. The
rabbi, who- also works as a gem
broker under the name Sam
Betz, was carrying a number of
diamonds of undetermined value
on the trip.
Cincinnati police discovered
Rabbi Betsalel's car next to a
boarded up tenement in the ci-'
ty's Over-thesIthine neighbor-
hood. The 1981 Renault Encore,
which according- to witnesses
had been sitting on the street
since Friday, had not been
stripped or damaged. "The only
things found (in the car) were
just a few belongings...jewelry
appraisal slips and some empty
jewelry boxes," Detective An-
drew Ordiway, of the Oak Park
Department of Public Safety
said.,
Cincinnati is on the freeway
route Rabbi Getsalel was &iv-
