A record for providing Israel
with ambulances through the
Magen David Adorn, the Israeli
equivalent of the Red Cross, was
reported at the annual dinner of
Detroit Friends of MDA on Sun-
day at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Carmi M. Slomovitz, who
presided at the annual event
attended by 350 supporters, an-
nounced that two fully-equipped
ambulances contributed by the
event's major honorees boosted
the total for the past eight years
to 50 as gifts from Detroit
Jewry.
The honorees were Louis and
Grant Silverfarb, whose gifts of
two ambulances since last
January were in behalf of them-
selves and associates, Bernard
Edelman and Harry Young.
The annual dinner was occa-
sion to honor Dr. John Mames
and his wife, Eva, who in a sur-
prise presentation on behalf of
the national and Israel MDA in
recognition of their dedicated
services to the movement since
its founding locallyt 15 years
ago, received a plaque from the
Michigan Chapter. The pre-
sentation was made by Philip
Slomovitz, editor emeritus of

The Jewish News, expressing
gratitude for the Mames' volun-
teer services which brought
Greater Detroit gifts to MDA
during the past five years to
more than a million dollars in
the decade of their volunteer
services, at an expense of about
11/2 percent, Carmi Slomovitz
said. "This is an unmatched
service and it honors John and
Eva Mames for their devotion
and also for having elevated
volunteerism , to its highest
levels," Carnal. Slomovitz added.

Soviets Seek
Israel Ouster

Sofia, Bulgaria — A Soviet
move to dust delegates from Is-
rael an three other countries
marked the opening of the
United Nations Educational Sci-
entific and Cultural Organiza-
tion's (UNESCO) general con-
ference in Sofia last week.
The Soviets are 1,seeking to
ban delegations from Grenada,
West Germany and Chile in
addition to Israel. The confer-
ence will run through mid-
November.
