I feel. compelled to respond tc
the letter from Alfred J
Fleischer of St. Louis, (Jewish
News, Oct. 11). Mr. Fleischer
decries the fact that the Or.
thodox movement has "no re•
spect for the Reform and Con.
servjitive members of our faith.'
He speaks of who is in th(
minority and who is in the
majority, and he gives som(
examples o2 "granite-like atti•
tudes of Orthodox leadership."

ahcwas Yisroel, our love of our
fellow Jews. The Torah stresses
the urgency of brotherly love be
tween Jews, that we should al.
ways seek to love, comfort, sup•
port, and respect every singh
Jew in the world, be he rich or
poor, black or white, Ashkenazi(
or Sephardic, etc. The Torah hat
a special adminition for extend
ing our love to the righteous
proselyte. We even find in the
Law a prohibition against de
spising our traditional foes: th(
Egyptian and the Edomite.
I can therefore assure Mr
Fleischer that every Orthodw
Jew who lives by the Laws o
the Torah loves him dearly an(
has for him the deepest respect
And that goes for every Reform
and Conservative Jew, an
every assimilated Jew, an
every intermarried Jew, as well.
However, we are not so per
verse that we can respect flag
rant violation of Jewish Law
While we respect the Reforn
Jew, as a person, we can neither
admire nor respect his lifestyle
As conscientious Jews who be
lieve in the Torah, we can onl
shun that lifestyle which per
mits or endorses disregard for
the Dietary Laws, the Sabbatl
and the sanctity of the Holl
Days. We cannot smile wit)
equanimity upon Moral in
souciance and the abandonmen
of our sacred heritage.
Mr. Philip Slomovitz, in thl
same issue of The Jewish News
addresses himself to the semi
Wane. He quotes the Talmui
(Sanhedrin 44a): Yisroel, al' al p
schechoto, Yisrael hu: "A Jew
even if he has transgressed, i
still a.Jew."
After all these years, Mr
Slomovitz misses the point. Th
passage says even if 'a Jew "ha
transgressed" in the past tens(
he "is still a Jew" in the presen
tense. What this means is tha
if a Jew has sinned, and his sin
are a thing of the past; his in
iquities are behind him becaus
he has repented and no longe
sins, then we call him a Jew -
in the present tense. We will no
hold against him his sinful past
But nowhere does it say that i
a Jew is sinning, he is a Jew re
gardless.
A Jew is one who upholds th
Law, who dedicates his life to it
sanctity, who strives to obsery
the Law to the fullest exten
possible. King Solomon sap
"There is no righteous man i
the land who does (only) goo
and not evil." No one is perfect.
However, those who nonchal
antly cast away the whol
Jewish heritage cannot expec
their lifestyles to earn the r(
spect of any Jew!
