Sonia's Plight
Needs Our Help
This is to call your attention
to the tragic plight of a very
special person, Sonia Lavigne, a
12-time Refused Soviet Jew.
Sonia's first 11 refusals were of
requests to make aliyah for
reunification with her sister
who, herself, had made aliyah
from a Moscow a number of
years ago.
Sonia's most recent request
was for emigrataion from the
Soviet Union to the United
States to live with her American
husband. This request, like all
of her previous ones, was arbi-
trarily denied by the Soviet gov-
ernment. No reason was offered!
The Soviets simply said that her
leaving "was not desirable."
When seeking clarification, she
was threatened physically and
abused psychologically. This is a
cruel irony for a country that
prides itself in "Soviet govern-
ment bodies do not only not pre-
vent such families (marriages
between Soviet citizens and citi-
zens of other countries) from
making a free choice, but render
necessary assistance in resolv-
ing the practical matters." (Ten
Years After Helsinki), Report of
the Soviet Committee for Euro-
pean Security and Co-operation).
Because Sonia seeks immigra-
tion to the United States to live
with her American husband, we
. can ask our Representatives and
Senators to use their own per-
sonal stature and that of their
elected office to bring Sonia's
circumstances to the attention of
appropriate parties in our State
Department and to the Soviet
Embassy.
There is a second reason: It is
vital for Sonia to know that
there are people on the other
side of the curtain that surround
her who are connected with her
in palpable ways. Thus, in addi-
tion to contacting our own
Representatives, please write to
Sonia so that she may gain
strength and courage from our
efforts and hopes. Your letters
to Sonia should be sent to me
for forwarding...
