Tay-Sachs Screening
At The Community Fair
Tay-Sachs is a brutal killer of
infants. Transmitted genetically,
it's 100 times more common in
Jewish children than in the
non-Jewish population. It can't
be cured, but it can be pre-
vented by using a simple blood
test that can identify Tay-Sachs
carriers.
A Tay-Sachs screening pro-
gram will be one of the services
offered at the Oct. 13th Com-
munity Fair sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
The Jewish News. There will be
a charge for the screening,
which will be held at the Sinai
Hospital booth from 2:30 to 5
p.m. at the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center.
The Detroit Metropolitan
Area Tay-Sachs Screening Pro-
gram is conducted under the
joint auspices of Sinai Hospital
of Detroit and the Genetic
Counseling Clinic of Henry Ford
Hospital. The program screens
child-bearing-age adults to de-
tect the presence of a particular
genetic trait. Whenever both
parents carry the Tay-Sachs
gene there is a 25 percent
chance that each pregnancy will
produce a child with Tay-Sachs.
This will happen only when
the offspring inherits the Tay-
Sachs gene from each of its par-
ents. If either parent is not a
carrier, the couple cannot pro-
duce a Tay-Sachs child.
An apparently healthy baby
with the defective gene will
begin to show signs of the dis-
ease at approximately six
months, with progressiVeloss of
physical skills, blindness, men-
tal retardation and coma. The
progress of the illness is irrever-
sible, ending in death by the
fourth or fifth year.
If a couple learns that they
are both carriers, they are re-
ferred to the Genetic Counseling
Clinic of Henry Ford Hospital,
where they will be told what the
alternatives are and can decide
which option to choose. They
may decide to have no natural
children, but to adopt. Or, they
may choose to have each preg-
nancy monitored by amniocen-
tesis, a relatiVely safe and sim-
ple test which can identify the
fetus that will develop Tay-
Sachs. A pregnancy in which
the fetus with Tay-Sachs is
identified can be therapeutically
terminated.
The only way to prevent
Tay-Sachs is to detect the
couples who are both Tay-Sachs
carriers and can transmit the
disease to their offspring.
The tests will be performed by
a laboratory technician from
Sinai Hospital. Assisting will be
volunteers from B'nai B'rith
Women.

The 1983 community walk for Soviet Jewry.
Question: Where can you lis-
ten to Israeli folk music, learn
about Soviet Jewry, challenge a
computer and have your portrait
drawn?
Answer: At the Community
Fair, set for Sunday, Oct. 13, at
the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield. Fair hours
are 2:30 to 6 p.m.
The Fair is being sponsored
jointly by the Jewish Welfare
Federation and The Jewish
News in conjunction with We
Walk As One, which is
scheduled to begin with 1 p.m.
registration at Hechtman Fed-
eration Apartments. People of
all ages will be walking in a
show of solidarity to raise funds
for Detroit's Allied Jewish Cam-
paign. The entire day will be a
celebration of our partnership
with Israel and the Jewish
People.
The Fair will have more than
30 display booths, representing
Federation's member agencies,
area synagogues and organiza-
tions affiliated with the Jewish
Community Council. The pro-
gram is designed to create a
greater awareness of the com-
munity services these organiza-
tions perform. At each booth,
visitors will be able to speak

teers, collect' informational
