Jerusalem (JTA) — Deputy
rime Minister and Foreign
inister Yitzhak Shamir flew
ome last week from his official
sit to Japan "satisfied and op-
mistic," according to Foreign
nistry officials in Jerusalem.
Shamir met with Premier
asuhiro Nakasone and Foreign
inister Shintaro Abe, and
eard from both of them that
okyo is eager to have closer re-
tions with Israel.
The group of Israeli business
xecutives who accompanied
t. amir on his visit stayed on for
etailed trade talks with
apanese officials and represen-
tives of leading companies.
The Israeli group met with
ome of the top names in
apanese industry at the
restigious Kei Damien Com-
ercial Centre. Among those
resent were representatives
om Toyota, Mitsubishi and
ther major firms which have
aditionally shunned direct
ntact with Israel for fear of
sing Arab markets.
In his numerous meetings
uring five days in Tokyo,
hamir stressed Israel's consis-
ent argument that close ties
ith Israel, both commercial
nd political, need not weaken
apan's ties with the Arab
tates.
Nakasone said Japan was in-
ensifying its politcal interest
nd involvement in the Middle
ast, "We are interested in a
ialogue with both sides," he
as .quoted as saying by Israeli
ources. Nakasone noted that
apan's markets were open and
ree — and Israeli companies
ere welcome to compete for
hem.
Shamir invited Abe to visit
srael and the Japanese Minis-
er accepted "in principle."

New York (JTA) — Ambas-
ador Moshe Yeagar, the
ewly-appointed consul general
f Israel in New York, called on
merican Jewry to increase its
fforts on behalf of Israel and
elp the Jewish state solve its
evere economic crisis.
In a press conference last
eek, shortly after his arrival
rom Israel, Yeagar said that
'the deep commitment of
merican Jews to the State of
sral is well known" and that
heir efforts through fundraising
nd the purchase of Israel Bonds
s much appreciated.
"One should hope that in the
oming year the. Jewish commu-
ity in America will do much
ore of the same," the new
nvoy said. He said that Ameri-
can Jews can accelerate their ef-
ort to strengthen Israel's
economy through increased
tourism to Israel and buying
Israeli-made products.
Yeager said that recent sur-
veys showed that less than 20
percent of American Jews have
visited Israel once. He said that
Jewish organizations in America
should organize tours to Israel
"in meaningful numbers."
