Dr. Ernest J. Gans, of Pleas-
ant Ridge, has been awarded the
Officer's Cross of the Order of
Merit of the FOderal Republic of
Germany.
The 93-year-old native of
Westphalia received the medal
last week in a ceremony at the
home of Dr. Goetz von Boehmer,
the Consul General for the Fed-
eral Republic in Detroit. Dr.
Gans served in the German
army during World War I and
was highly decorated. Compelled
to leave Germany in 1938, the
Jewish attorney made malty re-
turn trips to his native country
following World War II to repre-

Cross, "you conveyed your im-
pressions to your American
countrymen, Jewish and non-
'Jewish. Many of them, particu-
larly those who had suffered,
understandably had hesitations
to visit Germany. They listened
to you and, hopefully, you con-
tributed towards creating an
atmosphere of greater confi-
dence.
