ELLEN TRACY

BEST TAILOR SHOP-OR-CUSTOM ALTERATIONS

Linda Allard, designing the Ellen
Tracy collection, highlights handknit
sweaters. They include mohairs in a
pastel wash of chamois and white, or
deeper pink-flecked wild olive; thick,
deep-toned or pale rose, pink, mauve
and white alpacas; and giant, brilliantly-
hued paisleys on a dark ground.
Most of her sweaters are big and long.
But some, cashmere, for example, are
dainty.
Shirts shimmer and shine in silk
charmeuse, solid-colored, or with tiny
foulard patterning, in wild olive and
muted violet, for example, or scarlet
with wild olive. Other shirts, in cotton,
are a stripe with detachable white
collar; a white pleated tuxedo front on
a pink and olive stripe, a little boy collar
on a poet's shirt.
Allard's jackets include a soft version
of a riding jacket fitted through the
waist, made of riding twill. A big-
pocketed jacket with peaked lapels is
man-tailored but anything but mas-
culine.
Paisleys never looked newer than in
her fall skirts. Some are bright with
violet, scarlet and emerald on black.
Others are subtly shaded in violet on

violet, black on black.
Other skirt silhouettes include a short
skinny skimp in supple suede, gabar-
dines with pleats flowing from waist
yoke to mid•calf, A divided skirt in
gabardine gives new life to the culotte,
Pants? Choose from styles that are
tapered, full-flowing, trouser•leated,
cuffed and uncuffed, in gabardine, silk,
