Staff Report
The Jewish Service Corps,
which will send American vol-
unteers to Israel for one-year
periods beginning in 1986 (see
Aug. 2 Jewish News), is truly a
cooperative effort -- starting
with the application process.
"We will be relying quite
heavily on the Hillel directors to
screen applicants," Tom
Wexelberg-Clouser, the Detroit
Jewish Welfare Federation's
coordinator for the project said
this week. The Service Corps, a
joint project of the Jewish
Agency in Israel and the United
Jewish Appeal's Young Leader-
ship Cabinet in the U.S., has
enlisted federations throughout
the country to help get the pro-
gram off the ground. Pending
final approval, a pilot group of
about 200 volunteers age 18-25
will head for the Jewish state
next summer.
Wexelberg-Clouser expects
most of the Michigan volunteers
will be recruited from the state's
three largest college campuses:
the University of Michigan,
Michigan State University and
Wayne State University. B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundation direc-
tors at those three' schools will
be interviewing applicants and
explaining the program's goal to
interested students. They will
make recommendations to a
Federation lay committee and
the lay committee will meet
with applicants prior to their
acceptance into the Corps.
Students at schools with no
Jewish student organization and
non-students will be able to
apply for the program directly
through the Detroit Federation,
according to Wexelberg-Clouser.
For further information on the
Jewish Service Corps, contact
Wexelberg-Clouser, 965-3939.
