I wish to comment concerning
the article appearing on July 26,
on the New Jewish Agenda and
the interview with Ed Asner.
Ed Asner espouses the tenets
of the New Jewish Agenda as
the true path to progressive as-
pects of Judaism. Where has Ed
Asner been all these years that
he has not seen nor heard about
progressive Jewish activists
working continuously since their
strong visible participation in
the black civil rights movement?
In every phase of decent
human endeavor, the Jewish
progressives have been active in
the American Jewish Congress,
American Civil Liberties Union,
Gray Panthers, Operation Moses
for the Ethiopians, Democratic
Party, peace movement, Sierra
Club etc., battling in the courts
for separation of church and.
state, pro-choice, clean .air, cor-
porations' destructions of our
natural resources, etc. etc.
Locally, our Jewish Voca-
tional Service trains youth and
displaced homemakers of any
color and creed. Our National
Council of Jewish Women sup-
ports an institution for emotion-
ally disturbed children of all
colors and creeds.
On and on progressive Jews
help in all areas for the better-
ment of our fellow men.
For your enlightenment,
many members of the New
Jewish Agenda were never con-
scious of their Judaistic roots or
of their Jewish culture. We have
not heard their voices raised for
the human rights of Jews and
dissidents in the USSR, or for
the destruction of Polish unions
and the harassment of Walesa,
or for the murderous takeover of
Afghanistan, Have they pres-
sured Congress for cleaning up
our air, our land pollution, for
preserving help to our aged, to
our unemployed youth?
The Jews are the true pro-

gressive internationalists. De-
spite being the scapegoats suf-
fering abuse and even death
throughout the centuries, they
have offered positive contribu-
tions in medicine, science, law,
ethics, It seems the New Jewish
Agenda should allow their
hearts tv blood a bit of concern
for the Israeli Jews as wall as
the Palestinians,

cial.security.
I question what will happen
now that so many obstetricians
are leaving the field due to mal-
practice insurance rates. Who
will detect problem pregnancies?
Are general-practice doctors
equipped to spot this type of
problem?
Abortion is a many-sided is-
sue. Instead of being used as a
political "football" or a religious
revival, it should be looked at
for what it is, what it does, and
what is the aftermath.
I believe education is the key
to this issue, teaching teenagers
the responsibility of deciding to
have sex and its outcome; not
making abortions so easy to.ob-
tain.
I don't buy the argument poor
people need it. Poor people, only
by asking, can receive help
through agencies for planned
parenthood. Who are.4elivering
these unwanted babies? Who are
aborting them? Those are the
ones who should be providing
the education, not to be making
money on the operation.
Abortion boils down to sexual
responsibility. Who's responsi-
bility seems to be the question.

Service Corps
Feature Lauded

Your recent article in the
Aug. 2, 1985, 'issue concerning
the Jewish Service Corps was
well done and informative. I
truly believe that the project is
an important one which will
help forge even closer links be-
tween Israel and the American
Jewish community, especially
young Jews,
Several points which were not
included in the article deserve
special attention;
Detroiters Larry Jackier and
Jane Sherman, as well as San

Francisco Federation Executive
Director Brian Lurie, have been
instrumental in getting the
project off the ground and in the
success that it has had to date.
In addition, all three of them
are continuing to take vital
roles in insuring support for and
continued success of the project.
Persons interested in par-
ticipating in and/or receiving
further information about the
project should call Tom
Waselberpelouser at the
Jewish Welfare Federation,
