eggplant with walnuts and fresh
garlic) and Chicken Kabob
(boneless breast of chicken
marinated in garlic, lemon juice
and olive oil, served alongside
rice mixed with pine nuts, lamb
bits and spices.) ... Everything
was highly pleasing to the taste.
Jim and Alia are a hard-
working couple ... very intent
on making their restaurant a
success ... There are new re-
done walls, new ceiling ... and
the kitchen is a wonderful sight
... much unlike before ...
Many thounsads of dollars later
. and quite a change has come
about at this location ... but
success of Remal's will be be-
cause of Jim and Alia Sage.
WHO'S WHERE ... Ray
King on piano and vocals at Red
Cedars, Telegraph and Nine
Mile . through Sept. 28.
BIRMINGHAM THEATER
begins its 1985-1986 season of
seven productions Sept. 24
through June 8, 1986... and
will include Brighton Beach
Memoirs, Neil Simon's loving
and hilarious recounting of his
youth ... Also The Froeigner
and A Chorus Line.
Presently, the Birmingham
Theater is being rented by
Robert L. Maloney Productions,
whose SummerStage • inaugural
season has Hello Dolly! second
musical, through Aug. 25 ...
Was like a halo around face of
Henry K. Martin (Zodaic Thea-
ter, etc.) whose daughter,
Pamela Martin, -did such a fine
job as Minnie May.
The original David Merrick
production of Hello Dolly! star-
ring Carol Channing, opened in
November 1963 at Detroit's
Fisher Theater ... It was di-
rected by the late Gower Cham-
pion who made Massive re-
visions after receiving mixed re-
views from local critics ... and
opened on Broadway to raves
. Hello Dolly! then went on to
a 2,844 performance record ...
one of the most popular musi-
cals in past 25 years.
NAME PIC-A-DELI has
been dropped ... and Green-
field, north of 11 Mile site now
reopened is back to what it was
originally, Irving's Deli-
Restaurant' ... Deli is being
co-managed by Jeff Bloom and
Bill Soloway.
PLAIN DOWN-TO-EARTH
cooking ... nothing fancy, large
portions and low prices ...
That's why Mario's Pizzeria of
Royal Oak on Woodward be-
tween 12 and 13 is gaining such
popularity as a very casual fam-
ily restaurant.
"Pizza Eating Contest" by
Mario's Pizzeria for Muscular
Dystrophy is Sept. 1, 12 noon on
... That's date of Jerry Lewis
MD Telethon opening 8:30 p.m.
on Channel 2 ... (Yes, we'll be
there again this year) ... Every
half-hour will be contest with no
more than six contestants at a
time ... and one winner from
each 30-minute competition
vying in finals at 9 p.m. ... $3
registration fee will be donated
to MD ... plus 50 percent of all
customer checks and 50' percent
of waitresses Ups ... There will
ablo. 13014 144** lot reash do-

nations ... and a clown to
entertain the children ... First
prize is 12 inch black and white
television ... second price
AM/FM radio.
RUBE ISAACS, advertising
exec of Ruben Advertising, went
into Gallery Restaurant on W.
10 Mile ... Owner Lou Peppo
noticed that Rube had been corn-
ing in regularly and finally
asked if he was an attorney ...
Rube said he was in the adver-
tising business and Lou
exclaimed, "You must be- Rube
Isaacs! I'm Lou Peppo!"
They knew each other 30
years ago when Rube and the
late pr gent Sam Arnold would
go to the Peppo Bros.' Rail Bar
on Michigan Ave. where Lou
would automatically send him
over a corned beef sandwich ...
Rube's office was in David' Stott
Bldg. on Griswold and they took
alley to Rail Bar on Michigan
. It was nothing walking 'in
alleys downtown Detroit 30
years ago.
Used to be the Brass Rail, but
when Lou and brother Andrew
bought it from Bill Boesky and
Lena Friedman, widow of Joe
Friedman (other owner was late
Lou Friedman) they couldn't use
Brass Rail name because one on
Adams was still active.
NO TRUTH TO THE
RUMORS that Good Earth at
Tally Hall, Orchard Lake Rd.
and 14, is closed or going to
close ... This fine restaurant
with oodles of good food is very
mush open!
Shostak Bros. is now involved
in new ownership of Tally Hall
and Hunters Square.
FOUR FRESHMEN will be
at Angie's, Michigan's only
1940's nightclub, for two shows
Aug. 23 ... Special appearance
of the Freshmen is to celebrate
the new format at Angies
that of a 1940 nitery ... com-
plete with big bands and floor
shows ... The Four Freshmen
are remembered for many of
their recording with Capitol Re-
cords ... It's a Blue World, Day

By Day, Candy, Graduation Day,

and the concerts and recordings
made with Stan Kenton ... But
many will also recall their early
years in Detroit when they ap-
peared at the Crest Lounge and
the Pier 500 ... Angie's is on
Michigan and Telegraph in
Dearborn ... Four Freshmen
show performances are 10 p.m:
and 12 Midnight.
