BEST OF EVERYTHING

ONE OF THE owners at
Bloomies, Orchard Lake Rd.
south of Maple, said he had
heard sa much about Darby's
but never been there ... What
was it like and why did it have
such a great reputation? ... We
couldn't believe that there was
anyone who hadn't ever been to
Darby's ... or didn't know why
it enjoyed such a wonderful
reputation.
The questioner was one of the
podiatrist owners of Bloomies
. and a local community-ite at
that ... Perhaps he was away at
school ... That would command
some reasoning ... But never to
have been at Darby's? ... Come
to think of it, there were quite a
few others ... like Moses, Ab-
raham Lincoln, Superman, The
Lone Ranger and on and on.
One thing the doctor co-owner
of Bloomies did know ... that
Darby's was a restaurant in-
stitution that made people
happy ... Would you belive, he
said, "That's exactly what we
want to do here, and by golly,
we're going to do it!"
His intention is not to be an-
other Darby's ... don't think
anyplace can ... but to eventu-
ally create the atmosphere and
joy that Darby's presented.
This is no easy task ... Then
again, it isn't difficult either ...
In the case of Bloomies, once its
initial bad stigma has been re-
moved ... and this many are
happy to say ... is being accom-
plished perhaps such pre-
sentation can become a reality.
When Bloomies opened May
20- of this year, it immedately
got off on the wrong foot ...
Inept management, seemingly
incapable chef, inferior service,
very inconsistent food and al-
most immediate poor reputation.
This draws a criteria with
Darby's when it first opened
January, 1955 ... Sam Boesky,
Nate Lurie, Abner Wolf and
others, did not create raves
either ... in fact, like many
good restaurants,.it had a rough
three-month shakedown cruise

before any semblance of smooth
sailing began.
The owners of Bloomies are
already doing what Sam Boesky
did ... discovering mistakes ...
and quickly rectifying them ...
Remember, Satn was a re-
staurateur from the old school
... The closest these podaitrists
knew about operating a restau-
rant was that it takes healthy
feet to run around in one.
Biggest change, so far, has
been in management ... Few
caterers are capable of running
a full service restaurant .
Bloomies was unlucky enough to
have had one of the supposedly
non-competent ones ... But too
little too late is not the case
with Bloomies ... as it would
have been had the owners failed
to realize what was going on.
They've taken a giant step in
the right direction by hiring
"Big John" Mechlenborg as
overall manager ... People
know him from the days when
Tapparooney's was good ... he
knows how to treat people ...
(the former manager's abrasive•
ways were killers) ... like Big
John walking to a table where a
seemingly unsatisfied customer
looked at her food and was
about to call her waitress ... He
quietly asked, "May I take it
