Peres Hits
Apartheid

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Knesset Security and Foreign
Affairs Committee unanimously
condemned the apartheid policy
practiced by the government of
South Africa and voiced concern
about recent developments there
of mass arrests, violence and
killings.
While a leading black South
African Zulu chief, Fatshe
Buthelezi, arrived in Israel
Sunday to begin a ten-day visit,
Premier Shimon Peres told the
Cabinet of Israel's continued
abhorrence of South Africa's
apartheid policy of racial dis-
crimination.
"The Israeli government un-
conditionally disassociates itself
from South Africa's Apartheid
government," Peres told the
weekly Cabinet session, accord-
ing to a statement issued after
the meeting. "The state of the
Jewish _people will not accept
discrimination on the basis of
race, color, religion or any other
grounds."
Buthelezi, meanwhile, in a
rare visit by a Black South Afri-
- can leader, said Israel need not
sever diplomatic relations with
South Africa, though he said Is-
rael should begin an arms
boycott of the white minority
government in Pretoria. He said
an arms embargo of the gov-
ernment there was the only in-
ternational pressure he sup-
ported to obtain reforms.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Another
100 Lebanese detainees held at
the Atlit military , camp since
their transfer there from the
Ansar detention camp in south
Lebanon as the Israel Defense
Force withdrew from Lebanon,
were released Tuesday.
Before the release, Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin denied
that last week's killing of two
Israel Defense Force soldiers in
south Lebanon• indicated an in-
creased Israeli presence in the
south Lebanon security zone.
"We have reduced our
presence in Lebanon to a
minimum, mainly for liaison
with the south Lebanon Army,"
Rabin said in an interview with
Israel Radio. "Those two soldiers
who were killed in Lebanon
were part of a unit which is
normally and basically stationed
in Israel and carries out night
operations in the security zone,
or day operations patrolling and
ambushing, but they are not
stationed in Lebanon at all."
Meanwhile, Israel Defense
force aircraft bombed a terrorist
base in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa
Valley identified as a headquar-
ters of the Popular Front for the
liberation of Palestine General
command, a disident Palestinian
group headed by Mimed fibril.
AU planes returned safely to
their base, the army spokesman
