MORAH FEIGY'S

covenantial relationship with
God."
The conference, pointed out
Lynn Davidman, a doctoral
candidate in sociology at
Brandeis University, had
broken down into wrangling
between religious and social
science factions, but that con-
flict represented only a seg-
ment of the disputed areas.
There were many other
points of difference. Bedevil-
ed by what Mayer identified
as a lack of a common vocab-
ulary, few of the delegates
were able to agree on a defini-
tion for outreach, and in some
instances, conferees espoused
causes so arcane that no one
was able to challenge them.
Overall, however, the prac-
tical was heavily over-
shadowed by the theological
and ideological.
"There are a lot of front
line people doing outreach,"
said Mayer in a later assess-
ment of the seminar, "who
have contact with individuals
on a one to one basis, who are
very lonely, and who are in a
sense feeling that they're car-
rying the burdens of the Jew-
ish community, but they're
not sure that the community
is aware that they are doing
this work, and they don't feel
supported. I'm not talking
about institutional support
as much as moral support or
a sense of comraderie with
others who are doing some-
thing similar.
"It was almost likelisten-
ing to missionaries who've
been out in the bush too long
and really aren't sure if
there's anybody left at home
who knows or cares that
they're out there."
