people to return to the fold,
Teutsch said that they ought
to provide the opportunity
without generating a sense of
obligation. "The sign of our
success," he said, "is creating
commitment enough in people
to give something back to the
Jewish community. The def-
inition of outreach should be
broadened."
Joseph Polak, director of
Boston University's Hillel
Foundation, charged that Or-
thodox Judaism, flush with
success at having attracted
so many people in recent
years, is suffering from
"triumphalism."
"Triumphalism," said
Polak, "is bad for the ego.
Triumphalism leads to the
feeling that you have all the
answers and cease being ac-
countable. We need to work
together."
Previously, Rabbi Saul
Berman, of New York's Or-
thodox Lincoln Square Syn-
agogue, had stated the case
strongly for tradition, listing
three basic assumptions:
(1) Every Jew is subject to
the obligation to live a Torah
life. The covenant between
God and man is dependent on
God's absolute power. The
covenant creates obligation.
God makes demands and we
are duty bound to comply.
(2) Mitzvahs are the ve-
hicles for the transformation
of the individual into the best
possible human being. Shab-
bat is one of the vehicles. We
are not merely producers and
consumers and users of
power.
(3) God grants every in-
dividual freedom of will and
each person has the obliga-
tion to choose how he will re-
spond to the covenant with
God.
"It is vital to differentiate
between pluralistic Judaism
and Pluralistic Jewry," said
Rabbi Berman. There are
common destinies, he pointed
out, but stated that he does
not accept that there are
multiple correct models of
Judaism. Neither does he ac-
cept or acknowledge, he said,
"anything but the traditional
