swain. Gwen Verdon is charming
as the object of Ameche's amours,
Maureen Stapleton, another
great actress, unfortunately
doesn't get to do much here, Wil-
ford Brimley is terrific as the
crusty plain Joe, Jack Gifford
walks away with his scenes.
It is a dream cast!
And let's not forget Steve Gut-
tenberg, who does his real•life guy
character as the owner of the boat
the Antareane rent to go out on
the ocean looking for the cocoons.
Outienbergs energy, charm and
vitality give the picture a sub-

Welch, daughter of Rivet, or
Tyrone Power Jr., son of you-
know-who.
But while these two are indeed
beautiful, it is the old-timers who
are the main focus. And
what a cast! Hume Cronyn, Jes-
sica Tandy, Don Ameche, Gwen
Verdon, Maureen Stapleton and
Wilford Brimley. You may not
recognize Brimley's name, but
you do recognize his face. You saw
him most recently as the grand-
father in Country.
Hume Cronyn is one of the
toot _technicians performing
in a play he directed; nolirntletAtcl
tions: Every move, every gesture,
every expression is carefully
planned and meticulously exe-
cuted. Every aspect of a character
he creates is controlled.
So here, when he is happy, he
shows you happiness in extremis.
Of course, his method is some-
times a little cold. For example,
when he has to read a line like, "If
it's a choice of six more months on
earth with you, or an eternity
without you, I'll take the six
months," it doesn't come off to-
tally believably. But then, I don't
know if any living actor could
read a line as corny as that and
make it believable.
Jessica Tandy, Cronyn's real-
life wife and fictional wife in this
film, saves that scene even though
she hasn't a line. She just reaches
out to Cronyn after his pathetic
declaration, gives him a look, and
then, gently, touches hint.
Tandy is not recognized as the
true super-star genius she is. For
unlike Cronyn, who is very exter-
nal and mechanical, Tandy is
entirely internal. Everything
comes from the inside with an in-
tensity and believability that
never fails to move you.
In every role she has played,
from her stage Streetcar Named
Desire to the Gin Game; she has
been phenomenal. And while she
is certainly a star in every sense of
the word, she has never been put
in the pantheon where she be-
