Cocoon: A Perfect Mix
Of Young And Old
Cocoon (Rated PG) gets its title
from the 20 cocoons comfortably
settled on the ocean floor with an
abandoned Antarean in each. You
see, folks, these advanced crea-
tures from Antares had a base
here on earth 10,000 years ago.
But it seems that their site selec-
tion committee didn't do too well.
They picked Atlantis for the base.
You might say their investment
went into a sinking fund.
Well, we are told that most of
the Antareans got away okay. But
for some reason, 20 had to be left
behind. We're never told why.
Perhaps _the space ships 10,000 -
years ago just weren't big enough
for everybody.
So these 20 were left in these
cozy little cocoons on the ocean
floor to await rescue. Now, it does
seem that 10,000 years is a long
time between drinks, as they say,
but the reason for the multi-
millennia delay is never ex-
plained either.
But hold on guys, all this is be-
side the point. Because logic
doesn't have much part in this
film. And, amazingly, it doesn't
make any difference. Cocoon is de-
lightfully entertaining anyway!
What the film is really about is
finding the secret of eternal life.
The Antareans are just a plot de-
vice to provide the secret ingre-
dient. And since outer space and
extra-terrestrials are very "in"
right now, it must have struck the
movie-makers as a good box-office
ploy.
The setting for Cocoon is one of
those cheerless, antiseptic, de-
pressing retirement communities
in Florida where the "golden
years" become ghoulish.
We meet a lovable bunch of old
codgers in various stages of de-
crepitude. They accidentally fall
into the Antarean secret of eter-
nal life and are instantly rejuve-
nated. Naturally, this is an idea
that appeals to almost -everyone,
" so even the teenagers in the thea-
ter cheer when the fuddy-duddies
are reborn. They applaud when
they see senility turn into virility.
They howl with glee when the
newborn "boys" act like they're
out on their first date, taking cor-
sages to the girls at the "senior
prom" (and this senior prom is
really senior!).
Some of the critics have won-
dered in amazement at the appeal
Cocoon has for younger people.
But it isn't really all that hard to
understand. Even though the film
is ostensibly about old people, it's
really about old-looking people
acting like teenagers. And, young
or old, who wouldn't like to live
forever?
Especially if you could end up
looking like Antareans Tahnee
