The Best in Dining
CARL'S
Banquet Facilities '
leader of the United Mine Work-
ers.
"The CIO was born. Auto work-
ers in Flint went out on strike.
Ford Motor Co. goons stalked
unionists Walter Reuther and
Richard Frankenstein. But labor
eventually got its way."
JAN DRAKE'S Of West
Bloomfield, Northwestern and 14
Mile, which has gained such great
popularity for its salads, sand-
wiches and pasta dishes, will
celebrate its first anniversary in
August.
SERO'S on Northwestern is
celebrating anniversary number
two.
BACK IN 1974, James Beard,
one of America's top food authors,
wrote, "Our best (U.S.) restaurant
cities were New York, Los
Angeles, San Francisco and De-
troit."
Quite a compliment coming
from someone so learned in the
field of restaurant dining . . .
Since then, many authorities
have said that Metropolitan De-
troit is still among the nation's
best restaurant cities.
THEY TELL ABOUT the vet-
eran vaudeville monologist who
was playing gin rummy at pool-
side of Miami Beach hotel when
tough old drama critic fell out of a
window six stories above . . . As
the critic catapulted downward,
he spotted the vaudevillian below
and hollered, "Catch me, Sam,
catch me!" . . . "Nothing doing,"
Sam hollered back firmly. "Did
you catch me at Loew's Granada
last week?" . . . (There's a moral
somewhere in this story for
hard-nosed restaurant critics).
LOOKING BACK ON restau-
rants of yesteryears . . . Safari
Land . . . The A-Z Safari Land,
5830 Conner, featured wild game
dinners . . . like broiled boa con-
strictor, African lion steaks and
alligator tails.
The pantry shelf was full of
goodies from the African veldt,
but, even though the preparations
were excellent, they were not
recommended for the timid . . . It
also had an American menu for
the faint hearted.
For the adventurous, a good
dinner might have started out
with fresh baby bees in drawn
butter .. . For your entree, you
might have chosen the iguana
dinner ; .. if you gave three days
notice ... If iguana did not fit your
mood, you might have tried the
stuffed diamond back rattles-
nake, breast of crow or monkey
with fingers.
For an exotic dessert the
suggestion could have been choco-
late covered ants.
OVERHEARD ... At Nicky's,
"At a party, there are two kinds of
people - those who want to go
home early and those who want to
be the last ones in the place. Trou-
ble is they're always married to
each other ... at Roman Terrace,
"Have you noticed that the perfo-
rated area of our postage stamp is
stronger than the stamp itself?"
- at Rialto, "She's got more
chins than a Chinese telephone
directory" . . . at Golden Palace,
"He discovered a surefire way to
save money. He forgets who he's
borrowed it from."
