Article Sparks
Controversy

New York (JTA) — A con-
troversy over an article in the
World Zionist Organization's
Midstream magazine which
suggested that the attempt on
the life of Pope John Paul H was
part of a KGB plot to "camouf-
lage" his Marxist leanings, is
developing into a bitter battle
between the magazine's editor,
who wrote the article, and a
long time member of its edito-
rial board.
Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, an
editorial board member for 10
years, said last week that the
article could only serve to dam-
age Christian-Jewish relations,
"making the process of negotia-
tions and discussion between the
Roman Catholic Church and the
Jewish community more dif-
ficult."
He described the article as
"weird," and accused Midstream
editor Joel Carmichael of edito-
rial irresponsibility, a view that
is apparently shared by Milton
Konwitz, Chairman of the edito-
rial board. "The question is not
editorial freedom but editorial
responsibility," Konwitz said.

Cohen Resigns
From Seminary

New York (JTA) — Dr. Ger-
son Cohen, chancellor of the
Jewish Theological Seminary
(JTS) and president of its fa-
culty since 1972, told the JTS
board of directors last week he
planned to resign and asked the
board to name his successor.
The chanceloor, who partici-
pated strongly in a ten-year
fight to permit women to be
enrolled as candidates in the
JTS Rabbinical School, said he
was resigning' for health rea-
sons.
The first class of women at
the rabbinical school will begin
its second year in September.
