RODNICK BROS.
I wish to thank you for the arti-
cle on me, "Feminist and
Zionist," by Sandra Maurer, June
14th.
I must urgently, however,
make several corrections. Ms.
Maurer and I met for about half-
an-hour during Passover, hence
the emphasis on the Women's
Haggadah. She neglected to men-
tion the co-author, Nomi Nimrod,
or that it was being incorporated
into a collection of ceremonies,
`The Ceremonial Woman," which
I have performed.
As we talked about the origins
of ritual, the performing of the
Haggadah, I mentioned that we
are all radicals to our families as
we pursue our own paths. The ar-
ticle sounds like an attack on my
dear parents, Beatrice and Paul
Masserman, who are themselves
much more deserving of an arti-
cle — as long-time dwellers and
activists in Detroit — than I. And
my children also mentioned —
are not the necessary heirs to
every idea, every concept I have.
We are autonomous — they of
their time and their urgencies, I
of mine. So let that curious sen-
tence not be construed as my at-
tacking either my parents or my
progeny. It is connection and con-
tinuity — our gathering from our
past, our passing it on that is
what my work is about .. .
What I said most urgently,
perhaps, was my sorrow that
some of the spiritual guidance
available here in New York is not
there in Detroit. I spoke of the
necessity of the Havurah. I spoke
of St. John the Divine as a kind of
model which involved the young
in idealistic causes; aiding the
homeless, working at interna-
tional, inter-religious meetings
(Dean James Morton and I were
in the Sinai last March with 160
people of different faiths to create
sacred space, to hear each other's'
prayers and hopes), and that the
Cathedral — as it is called in
New York — has artists in resi-
dence to give it yet another di-
mension. I was wishing for that
level of concern, of involving of
the young by the synagogues in
Detroit. It is an antidote to the
present, heavy times in which we
dwell.

Embassy Arrests:
Wrong Message
/ THE
May I take this opportunity to
amplify my comments in your
June 14 front-page story, "Send-
ing a Message." I am concerned
that the brevity of the summary
may lead to misinterpretation of
my feelings.
I am in full moral and emo-
tional support of my colleagues
who were arrested in Washington
at a demonstration outside the
Soviet Embassy. I myself have
stood in the "Silent Vigil" there
several times. However, I ques-
tion the usefulness and benefit to
Soviet Jews of "illegal activism in
that particular situation."

obedience implies an acceptance
