legal but ethical) activities. In
the case of the rabbis arrested in
Washington, a trial was unex-
pected; publicity was the major
objective for the protest. It seems
to me that the results of this situ-
ation will only be confusing and
frustrating.
On the one hand, the message
that is being sent is jumbled with
the contradiction of the Soviet
Embassy prosecuting demon-
strators while the South African
Embassy does not. This dif-
ference might be what is debated
in the courts, not the persecution
of Soviet Jews.
On the other hand, the Soviets
will now widely promulgate in

their media the "lawlessness" of
American Jewish leaders (the
same line which they promote in
their local anti-Semitic litera-
ture). While some of the re-
fuseniks may understand what is
truly going on in Washington,
many more Soviet citizens will
not and draw further wrong con-
clusions.
In short, I feel that the present,
illegal demonstrations are, un-
fortunately, sending a mixed
message to the world. It is a mes-
sage which, I fear, will not, in the
long run, help our brothers and
sisters who yearn to be free.
