moment, for I never heard him
say anything like that on the
way home from Algiers."
A few weeks after his report
to Congress, Roosevelt, writ-
ing to the Arabian-Jewish
problem solver, Ibn Saud, ad-
dressed him as my "great and
good friend." I telephoned
Bernard Baruch to tell him
our little Roosevelt amnesty
was at an end.
Baruch answered, "I have
had a two-hour talk with
President Roosevelt about the
Jews and the Jewish problem.
I have spoken also to Gover-
nor Dewey on the same sub-
ject. I can only tell you as a re-
sult of these talks that, despite
my having been a lifelong
Democrat, I would rather
trust my American Jewish-
ness in Mr. Dewey's hands
than in Mr. Roosevelt's."
This calls for an even more
sensational Baruch quotation
appearing in the Ben Hecht
story. One of Hecht's most appe-
ctling wa
entitled "My Uncle Abraham Re-
ports." Bernard Baruch is quoted
telephoning Hecht a few days
after the ad appeared and told
him: "I was talking to Mr.
Roosevelt and he was very upset
about your 'Uncle Abraham' ad.
He told me he's going on an im-
portant trip soon, and that during
this trip he will settle the Jewish
problem in the Near East to my
satisfaction — and yours. In view
of this statement, I am taking the
liberty of asking you to call off
any further criticism of President
Roosevelt and his administration
— until you hear from me again."
Hecht and his associates in the
Committee for a Jewish Army
and in the mobilization of public
sentiments condemning the
British restrictions, took the re-
quest into account.
Two plays by Ben Hecht, A
Flag Is Born and We Will Never
Die, netted large sums in support
of the Irgunists and'the Commit-
tee for a Jewish Army and added
to the condemnations of those
who failed to assist in rescuing
sufferers from Nazism and in the
establishment of the Jewish
state.
There are some items in the
Hecht story that will surely be
questioned. One is a purported
quotation from a speech by
Chaim Weizmann to a Polish
Jewish audience in which, as
Hecht charges, the Zionist leader
played down the need for a large
and popular Jewish migration to
the Jewish National Home, limit-
ing his appeal to students ancl the
wealthy. This is difficult to be-
lieve. Equally questionable is the
charge that David Ben-Gurion,
as the leader of the Labor
Zionists, also had failed to act
firmly against the British in
Palestine. Hecht charged in his
autobiography:
In Tel Aviv, the Socialist
Jews led by Ben-Gurion, the
Zionists and Jewish Agency-
ites all scampered eagerly to
British headquarters to pro-
test their own innocence, and
to proVe it by betraying Irgun
