hiding places to British In-
telligence. British troops with
names and addresses in hand,
supplied by these Jewish
organizations, arrived at
secret stores of Irgun bullets
and seized them, marched
straight to the hideaways of
the bravest and cleverest of
the Irgun warriors, and ar-
rested them.
The men betrayed by Ben-
Gurion's Socialists and the
Zionists were sent off to desert
concentration camps or hanged
on Palestinian gallows.
True, there was official Zionist
opposition to the Irgun, but never
to the extent charged by Hecht.
Furthermore, Ben-Gurion did not
"scamper." As a matter of fact,
there is on the record his famous

Rabbis' Arrests Scored

Washington (JTA) — Thirty-
three congressmen have signed a
letter addressed to Attorney
General Edwin Meese III protest-
ing the U.S. Attorney for the Dis-
trict of Columbia's decision to
prosecute 24 rabbis and one
Lutheran minister who were ar-
rested last month during a
demonstration to dramatize the
plight of Soviet Jewry in front of
the Soviet Embassy.
The letter asks the Attorney
General why the rabbis and the
minister are being prosecuted
when similar action has not been
taken against anti-apartheid pro-
testors outside the South African
Embassy. The 25 men and
women were arrested on May 1
and accused of violating a Dis-
trict of Columbia law which pro-
hibits protesting within 500 feet
of an embassy.
Meanwhile, in New York last
week, the Workmen's Circle
called- on Premier Shimon Peres
of Israel to reject an appeal by
Leon Dulzin, chairman of the
World Zionist Organization
(WZO) and Jewish Agency
Executives, that he raise with
President Reagan the issue of de-
nying refugee status to Soviet
Jews who leave the USSR with
Israeli visas but do not settle in
Israel.

statement to the British and the
world during World War II that
the Jews of Palestine would con-
tinue to fight the British White
Paper, restricting Jewish immi-
gration, even if there was a war,
while lending all sacrifices to aid
in the defeat of Hitlerism.
A Child of the Century never-
theless remains in the records as
a very great historic document,
as Sidney Zion commends it in
his introduction to the reprinted
1985 text of the Hecht story. The
Hecht story will always be among
the most revealing, albeit also
most sensational accounts, of
anti-Nazi activism, and the con-
demnation of the British pledge-
breaking. It is also a Zionist con-
tribution to Israel's state build-
ing.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Diaspora
Jewry is shrinking rapidly and
by the year 2000 will number
only eight million compared to
9.7 million Jews who presently
live outside Israel, according to
Minister of Labor and Welfare
Moshe Katzay.
By 2025 there could be as few
as five million Jews left in the
Diasora, Katzav warned in the
course of an address to the Zionist
General Council which ended a
week-long meeting here Friday.
He said the forecast was based on
scientifically conducted studies
by demographic experts at his
ministry.

Barnett Zumoff, president of
the Workmen's Circle, said in a
letter to Peres that "the Dulzin
appeal is narrow and assaults the
right of Jews to freely emigrate
wherever they choose."

War Costlier,
Figures Show

Jerusalem (JTA) — A Hebrew
University economist said that
the cost of the Lebanon was two
or two-and-a-half times higher
than the official figures indicate.
The defense budget places the
cost of the three year venture into
Lebanon at $1.6-$1.8 billion. But
according to Prof. Haim Barkai,
$4-$4.5 billion is closer to the
mark.
Meanwhile, military activity
continued in the south Lebanon
security zone two weeks after the
Israel Defense Force officially
completed its withdrawal. Three
katysuha rockets were fired at
IDF troops in the Shakif el-
Hardoun region of the zone.
In a related event, Premier
Garret Fitzgerald of Ireland, said
his people have neither under-
stood nor been able to accept the
manner in which Israeli forces,
and militias supported, armed
and advised by the Israeli army,
have harassed and at times phys-
ically attacked the UNIFIL
forces, including the Irish contin-
gent. Israel, he said, should use
its influence with the local
Lebanese militias to enable UN-
IFIL to carry out its mandate un-
hindered.

Fund Raiser

The Youth Committee of the
Jewish Community Council's De-
troit Soviet Jewry Committee
(DSJC) raised $500 from the
group's sale of stuffed toys during
a Purim raffle and at the recent
Freedom Concert for Soviet
Jewry. Shari Wagner is chair-
man of the Youth Committee.
