your senses, leisurely stroll
through the stalls. Be sure to
take a wagon or stroller for
the kids, and a small cart for
all your purchases. Look out
for the bunnies hiding under
the vegetable crates.
Come as you are and enjoy
the sights and sounds of the
four Saturday children's con-
certs at Meadowbrook (379-
2010). Unassigned seating
lets you sit up close and point
out instruments to your chil-
dren as they munch on a
peach. Even babies are wel-
come; the open pavilion ab-
sorbs their noise. Bring a pic-
nic lunch for after the concert
and eat way up on one of the
hills.
Or, settle in on a small
patch of earth Thursday
nights at Shain Park in Bir-
mingham (644-1800). Bring
blankets, lawn chairs and
picnic hampers, diapers and
balls. The children can play
on the gym equipment before,
during and after the concert.
Be sure to have your yearly
visit to the Detroit Zoo (398-
0900) coincide with a special
promotion. Last year we saw
Spiderman; the year before,
the Hulk. At least time your
visit for a day with a breeze.
Don't forget strollers, sun
hats, wipes, small cups and a
thermos of water. (The zoo
only sells giant drinks). A
visit to the reptile house and
the zoo train complete the
day.
Visit the animals and fish
at the Belle Isle Zoo and
Aquarium (398-0900, 267-
7159). Don't forget the area's
three petting farms: Maybury
State Park (349-0817), Ken-
sington State Park (685-9105)
and Upland Hills Farm (628-
1611).
Or, find the closest duck
pond and bring stale bread
and Cheerios. Just be sure to
steer your children away
quickly if the ducks still look
hungry after finishing your
first offering.
If you're tiring of your favo-
rite watering hole, catch a
wave at the Metro area's two
new wave-action pools —
Waterford Oaks Wave Pool
and Waterslide (858-0918)
and Michigan Water World in
New Hudson (437-7550).
Visit the area museums. In-
stead of trying to see every-
thing, just visit the displays
you're sure your children will
enjoy. The Historical Museum
has its basement cobbled
street (833-1805). The Detroit
Art Institute's Primitive Art
Gallery has masks, totems
and scary looking sculptures,
while the Egyptian Gallery

paddlewheel steamboat and a
turn-of-the-century carousel.

Ride a real train. Take Am-
