O
ilarge or small

picture of her great-grandmother.
The discovery made her realize
that there "must be lots of people
like that who have similiar his-
tories but don't know about it."
"There are marvelous things
about women hidden in books,"
she says, "which to most women
are closed books because they
can't read the languages." _ _
Shkop receives a great deal of
support from the Orthodox
women she addresses. But she has
also run up against resistance,
mostly from women who are -af-
raid that, after discovering their
relatives' 'accomplishments, they
will be compelled to change their
way of life.
Shkop feels most women "have
a natural need to achieve their
potential. Laziness and passivity
come out of fear," she claims. -
Shkop does not speak profes-
sionally. Following a teaching
career in a Hebrew day school, she
is working on a PhD inhuman
resources. She speaks because she
wants Jewish women, all women,
"to understand what Jewish
women's lives are like."
