Remember growing up? Your
parents would take you down
memory lane, opening the dusty
photo album in the attic with pic-
tures of relatives from the old
country. "Here's great-grandpa
Avrahm. He was a wonderful
teacher and . . . wait! Here's Uncle
Haim. He was such a wonderful
doctor."
"But Daddy, what about great-
grandma? Aren't there any pic-
tures of her?"
The fact is, according to Esther
Shkop, Jewish women "haven't
been portrayed in history."
Shkop, from Chicago was in De-
troit recently to speak for Machon
L`Torah on "Shattering the Or-
thodox Myth."
A tenth generation Israeli,
Shkop is trying to dispel "percep-
tions I've often heard expressed."
There are "very common wide-
spread images" of what Orthodox
women are like:
"Orthodox women are unedu-
cated, they are passive, easily in-
timidated, happy because they
have led sheltered lives, and Or-
thodox women are submissive and
willingly second class, which is
nonsense!"
Surprisingly, Shkop says these
Orthodox stereotypes "most viru-
lently come from Jews."
A graduate of the University of
Denver, Shkop feels that
stereotypes come from self-
hatred. She believes that, over the
years, women have admired the
supposed beauty of the non-
Jewish women. "To be blond and
blue-eyed was the sign of beauty."
One way to change stereotypes
is by introducing positive images.
She claims that Jewish women
today have no knowledge of their
own past. "People haven't known
about Orthodox women. They
don't know how their grand-
mothers lived in Europe. . .
"I don't think many Jewish
women have a positive identity,"
she says. While reviewing his-
tory, she notes that women's atti-
tudes changed when they came to
the United States from Europe.
They decided to "throw" (away)
anything that grandmothers re-
presented." Women tried to be-
come less and less Jewish. They
became Americanized by ridding
themselves of babushkas and be-
coming ladies of leisure.
A women with the name Mira
"There are marvelous
things about women
hidden in books," she
says, "which to most
women are closed
books because they
can't read the
languages."
called herself Molly. Her daugh-
ter Sadie became Stephanie.
Then, because Stephanie didn't
want anyone to know that she was
Jewish, she named her daughter
Christine. "And Christine, if she
hasn't lost complete touch (with
Judaism), will name her daughter
Elana," states Shkop, because
suddenly, as a result of the State
of Israel, it's become acceptable to
be Jewish and to be proud of it."
But, Shkop says, because ,
women erased their past there are
now "neither verbal nor visual
images of what Jewish women are
like."
She became interested in this
problem because of her own im-
pressive history. "I grew up hear-
ing who I was named after," hear-
ing stories about her great-
grandmother who acted as her
blind father's eyes. Shkop's
grandmother organized the first
mental hospital in Israel.
At the University of Denver,
Shkop was asked to catalogue He-
brew books. In one she found a
