that every five years you can
play in a new age group."
Last year Brose was
ranked No. 1 in the Midwest
in his age group.
"I love playing in tourna-
ments. This age group thing
has made it feasible. If they
didn't have it there'd be no
way a guy my age could
compete. This goes up to 85-
and-over.
"You go out and play in
tournaments at a national
level and you run into guys
you played as a kid. Of
course, there isn't the crazi-
ness there was when you
were a kid. There's not as
much emotion."
Brose has spoken to others
who have competed in the
Maccabiah Games to get a
handle on what to expect, al-
though with his experience
there shouldn't be much of a
problem with butterflies.
"It's played like a tourna-
ment, not like a team event,"
he says.
The first time Brose vis-

minute was occupied" on a
tour. "The second time we
took our children with us
and retraced our steps. This
time well be loose. Well
rent a car for the second half
of the trip. The closing cere-
monies are in Jerusalem and
I'll even commute from Tel
Aviv if I have to."

with strong contingents from
Australia, England, Canada,
Mexico, Argentina and the
U.S., and possibly Brazil and
South Africa.
"We came in second to
South Africa both times I
went before," the 35-year-old
advertising promoter says.
"The game played in Israel is
international squash. It has
a slightly different court. It's
wider, and the ball is softer
than in American squash."
Linden took a silver medal
both times he competed.
"I play squash for fun, for
the recreation and exercise,"
he says. "It's a game, unlike
running, where there's
strategy and so forth. I got
- started at the Jewish Center
and have been playing for
about 20 years. I've been city
and state champion and at
one time (1977) I was ranked
No. 2 in the country." -
Linden says he also has
held a top ranking for 35 and
over in international rules
and was New York city
champion. He lived in New
