Bitburg Memories

As a child I clearly remember
growing up and reciting the
Pledge of Allegiance and singing
the Star Spangled Banner daily.
I was proud then, proud to be an
American and proud to be a Jew
living in America.
Since President Reagan vis-
ited Bitburg Cemetery I have
felt extremely alienated as an
American, and am wondering
where the meaning has gone to
the Pledge of Allegiance and the
Star Spangled Banner. Yes, I
know we live in a democracy,
but does that mean that the
leader of our nation, who is sup-
posed to represent the people,
can do whatever he wants to do?
I will never forget one eve-
ning while I was a teenager,
when my father leafed through
a book my younger sister was
reading on Nazi Germany. He
ran across a picture of what I
thought was just a soldier. My
father quietly whispered to him-
self the soldier's name and that
he was beaten by him in Au-
schwitz. I looked at my father
and thought I was hearing

things. I couldn't comprehend
why anyone would want to
harm my father.
Quite simply, I'm very, very
tired of anti-Semitism and tired
of being a scapegoat. If anything
positive comes out of Reagan's
visit to Bitburg, it should be
that as Jews we should realize
we are alone, and we can't de-
pend on anyone. We must be
strong in our religious beliefs as
well as helping our fellow Jews
all over the world. Yes, we
stand alone, but alone we stand
together.
