The fourth annual Freedom
Concert for Soviet Jewry may be
the only musical event this year
where the audience will provide
the "voice" in addition to the fea-
tured entertainers, according to
Cong. Shaarey Zedek Rabbi Irwin
Groner.
The Soviet Jewish refuseniks
are being subject to harassment
and intimidation in ever increas-
ing measure and it is our respon-
sibility to be their voice," Rabbi
Groner told The Jewish News this
week. Detroit-area residents have
the chance to do just that by
attending the concert, which fea-
tures the musical troupe Safam, 8
p.m. Monday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
A sell-out crowd of 1,200 is ex-
pected for the event, which is
sponsored each year by the De-
troit Soviet. Jewry Committee
(DSJC) of the Jewish Community
Council. Tickets are still avail-
able and may be ordered by cal-
ling the JCCouncil, 962-1880.
Rabbi Groner, who will deliver
greetings from the host
synagogue and a message on the
continuing critical nature of ef-
forts on behalf of Soviet Jewry
prior to the main act, feels "re-
deeming the captives" must be a
community-wide effort and that
"our support for the Detroit Soviet
Jewry Committee is Jne way to
channel the effort on behalf of our
brethren behind the iron curtain."
The original compositions per-
formed by Safam will focus on
Soviet Jewish life in America as
well as the plight of the refusenik.
Cantor Chaim Najman, of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, will lead the sing-
ing of "The Star Spangled Ban-
ner" and "Hatikvah."
Special guests in the audience
will include groups from the
Jewish Association for Retarded
Citizens and residents from the
Jewish Welfare Federation's
Fleischman Residence. Adat
Shalom Synagogue Rabbi Efry
Spectre and Barbara Stollman, of
the DSJC, are also scheduled to
address the gathering.
Meanwhile, national cam-
paigns to aid those Jews remain-

ing in the Soviet Union are pick-
ing up steam.
An innovative plan to organize
monthly educational visits to the
USSR by cantors, rabbis and
educators is under consideration
by the Cantors Assembly. The
plan was introduced during the
group's 38th annual convention in
Grossinger's, N.Y. this month.
The cantors' group began dis-
cussions of the plan following an
address on the plight of Jews in
the Soviet Union by Abe J. Bayer,
director of international affairs
for the National Jewish Commu-
nity Relations Advisory Council.
Mr. Bayer called for the estab-
lishment of programs to send to

the USSR each month a team con-
sisting of a cantor, rabbi and
teacher to help keep Jewish life
alive by teaching Soviet Jews
about Judaism through song and
traditional Jewish prayers.
"The time has come to repay the
collective debt we owe to genera-
tions of hazzanim from Eastern
Europe," Bayer declared.
And in a telegram sent last
week to Soviet Secretary General
Mikhail Gorbachev, Union of
Councils for Soviet Jews
President Morey Schapira called
for the immediate release of
Soviet dissident scientist Andrei
Sakharov on the occasion of his
64th birthday (May 24).
Sakharov, who has been in
internal exile in Gorky since
1980, recently threatened to re-
sign from the prestigious Soviet
Academy of Sciences unless his
wife, Dr. Yelena Bonner, is
allowed to receive proper medical
treatment in the West. His con-
tinued outspokeness on the issue
of human rights in the Soviet
Union, which resulted in his exile
to Gorky, has been an embar-
rassment to Soviet officials.
