Good food and the amenities
that go with it never goes out of
style. Still runaway favorites
are Joe Muer's, London Chop
House, Pontchartrain Wine Cel-
lars, Mario's and Dearborn Inn.
Other restaurants mentioned
in a recent listing of wining and
dining critics are Justine, Van
Dyke Place, The Money Tree,
Roma Cafe, Restaurant Duglass,
Chuck Muer's River Crab,
Elizabeth's, Golden Mushroom,
Dennison's in Farmington Hills,
Carl's Chop House, the Shiek,
Chung's and LaRotisserie.
"Some critics hail Aliette's
Bakery, a small bistro in Detroit
with French classics cooked to
order, Farm House in Hazel
Park for short ribs, grilled lamb
chops and homemade pies and
cakes, the Embers in Mt. Pleas-
ant featuring seafood de jonge,
Chaim Sweeney's Dearborn and
Peabody's in Birmingham for
steaks, barbeque ribs and white
fish.
Detroit and surrounding areas
are restaurant towns from es-
cargots and lobster to pizza and
pasta. With all tin new glamor
spots, ethnicity, elaborate decor
or artificial ferns and question-
able antiques, top chefs and
prices to match, • good old
standbys like Joe Muer's and
Lelli's are still mentioned by the
seasoned diner as outstanding.
You can be away from Detroit
for years and still walk into
Pontchartrain Wine Cellars and
get that old romantic feeling.
Restaurants are places to
socialize, be seen and even to
fall in love. And nostalgia has a
lot to do with it.
Speaking of nostalgia, Detroit
once had a reputation as a city
of great legitimate theaters. Do
you remember the Cass, the
Shubert and the Detroit Opera
House? All were showplaces as
famous as the Fisher, Masonic
Temple and the Birmingham
Theater are now.
"The Cass fell upon hard
times and converted to movies.
In 1965, as the Summit, it had
its last glory hosting wide sc-
reen Cinerama productions. But
by 1978, the Cass was converted
into a parking lot.
The Detroit Opera House was
part of the Nederlander dynasty.
Built in 1869, the theater
burned down and was rebuilt as
the Shubert-Detroit Opera
House. It ran on until 1931. It
opened for movies but the De-
pression closed it. Starting in
1935, it became Sam's Cut Rate
and it was demolished in 1966.
"In the 1940's, David Neder-
lander bought the Shubert share
of the Shubert-Lafayette which
fell to the wrecker's ball and
parking lot pavers in 1963.
Smaller theaters met a tragic
fate as well. The Vanguard in
the mid-1960s filled a building
on Elizabeth. Concept East, a
tiny coffee, house theater on
Grand Circus Park, was alive
and well in the 1960s. The
Stables in those same years saw
its first light in the former
stable on Temple near
downtown. One faction stayed
