perienced Jewish educator. As
a former day school teacher
and Hebrew school director,
and as a one-time single par-
ent, now a remarried mother
with a blended family of five
children, she had a ready-
made "wish list" for the family
like program.
First on her list was the tra-
ditional Sunday school. For
years, children have been
m
dropped off at the
synagogue on Sunday. There
was little communication or
sharing between parents and
the school and very little inte-
gration of school content into
the home. Although parents
were well intentioned, many
had discontinued their own
Jewish education years ago at
the magic age of 13. They no
longer remembered Hebrew
and were unsure about Jewish
history and holidays. For
many, their children's Sunday
school lessons and experiences
often caused embarrassment
and felt intrusive.
Appelman recognized that
young Sunday school families
were in need of education and
willing to try something new.
The Rainbow Connection was
created to identify these young
families, help them feel spe-
cial and connected to the
synagogue by offering them
total family involvement in
their children's education.
The Rainbow Connection of-
fers member families with
children in kindergarten
through second grades free
tuition, a monthly newsletter,
a year-round gamut of excit-
ing family programs and spe-
cial events and a series of holi-
day workshops and holiday
educational packets mailed to
the home.
The Rainbow Connection is
Shaarey Zedek's best,
brightest and most innovative
program. It is a public rela-
tions success and a joyous cel-
ebration of the family. New
parents are immediately
caught by the engaging and
delightful Rainbow Connec-
tion logo — happy-looking
children of all sizes and shapes
smiling and taking a bow.
When the program first be-
gan, a series of coffee meetings
were held in the rabbi's study
with incoming parents. Par-
ents were asked for input and
for total commitment.
To foster a visual connection
between home, school and
synagogue, all children are
given plastic Rainbow Con-
nection tote bags. They are
also given a RainbOw Connec-
tion scrapbook and
encouraged to keep track of
their work, special events and
