PAT ARCHER: 358-3355

Southfield, MI
THERE WAS THE fellow so
mean that he'd send a get well
card to a hypochondriac . . . or
tears month of December off
calendars to fool his children .. .
or gets up at 4 a.m., leans out win-
dow and whistles to wake up the
birds . . . If he killed himself, he'd
get the right man.
For sure we're not talking about
Mort Zieve, chairman of the board
at Simons Michaelson Zieve Ad-
vertising in Troy . . . And because
of this . . . besides his expertise .. .
Mort will make a wonderful film
critic for The Jewish News.
He'll tell it as he sees it . . . but
most importantly, Mort will be
fair . . . He's always been that
kind of a person . . . and nothing
. . . but nothing . . . can sway him
otherwise.
Mort is more than a very fine
advertising executive . . . He
studied theater at Wayne State
University and Stanford Univer-
sity . . . was a TV director and
producer at WXYZ Channel 7 .. .
Simons Michaelson Zieve has won
awards in every major United
States television competition for
commercials . . . including Clio
and Detroit Emmy . . . Of the lat-
ter, it is the only agency locally
winning two years in a row for
best commercials (Elias Big Boy
and Energy Exposition Show at
Cobo Hall).
Mort has won several Interna-
tional Broadcast awards in Hol-
lywood . . . plus writing music for
several scores . . . Last spring, he
wrote music for "How Many Min-
utes To Midnight" anti-nuclear
revue produced at Wayne State
University, with lyrics by Rudy
Simon . . . Mort is one of the
writers . . . plus directing and
producing . . . of "Tomorrow Is
The Most Important Day," a
13 1/2-minute dramatic public rela-
tions film for Jewish Chautauqua
Society.
Even very talented and sweet
wife Mary Lou is movie and show
biz oriented . . . She is the local
president of AFTRA (American
Federation of Television and
Radio Artists) . . . and both love to
attend movies . . . At their condo
in Boca Raton, Fla., it's nothing
for them to sometimes see seven
films during.a week.
Welcome aboard, Mort . . . Hav-
ing a writer, director, producer
and composer do movie critique
for The Jewish News is all impor-
tant . . . Knowing right from
wrong is one thing . — to appraise
the difference with knowledge-
able wordage for descriptive re-
viewing is the essence of signifi-
cance.
NEW NAME OF Irving's
Delicatessen-Restaurant on
Greenfield, just north of 11 Mile,
is Irving's Pic-A-Deli . . . Until
new sign arrives, present one still
just says Irving's . . . There's new
wallpaper, ceiling, extended
carry-out section with cashier at
end instead of glassed enclosure,
new modernized lighting fixtures
. . . new menu with new items .. .
and new employee uniforms.
ONCE MANY PEOPLE get to
be a "star" they expect, even de-
mand, preferential treatment .. .
But as David and Doreen Herme-
lin found out, this is not the case
with Norman Fell (TV's Mr.
Roper) and his wife Karen .. .
Last year, the Fells were house
guests of the Hermelins when
here on one of their visits for
Michigan Cancer Foundation (to
film MCF TV announcements) .. .
Dave and Doreen tried but were
unsuccessful in enticing the Fells
to an impressive-evening at any of
Detroit's very fine restaurants .. .
Their choice, instead, was to
spend evening at home with the
Hermelin family.
Norman regaled them with one
hilarious tale after another
honest-to-goodness bloopers and
behind-the-scenes antics . . .
David says that the blooper
stories on TV can't hold a candle
to Norman's first-hand accounts.
But what entranced the Herme-.
lins more than anything else was
the "other side" of Karen and
Norman . . . They are very warm,
intensely caring people . . . a de-
lightful pair whose deep affection
for each other also encompasses
those around them.
It's little wonder that this
celebrity couple has won the
hearts of all who have gotten to
know them, including the folks at
Michigan Cancer Foundation .. .
The Fells have virtually adopted
Detroit's cancer research institu-
tion as their own . . . It's the char-
ity they actively support and com-
ing to Detroit for MCF is impor-
tant to them.
In appreciation to the Fells for
this support, Michigan Cancer
Foundation has designated its
Third Annual Benefit Dinner .. .
May 9 at Westin Hotel . . . as a
Tribute to Karen and Norman
Fell . . . The Fells, in turn, have
invited celebrity friends from
New York and Hollywood to join
them . . . Reading like a Who's
Who, those who have agreed to
participate on this celebrity com-
mittee are further testimony of
the warm affection their friends
have for the Fells . . . And many of
these celebrities are planning to
attend.
Lee Iacocca is honorary chair-
man and Dom DeLuise, Tim Reid,
Burt Reynolds and John Ritter
are participating as honorary co-
chairmen . . . A very entertaining
evening filled with show business
humor and an outpouring of good
fellowship inspired by the
warmth, compassion and caring of
this gracious couple . . . It's cer-
tain to be another fine MCF eve-
ning . . . For ticket information,
call Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion, 833-0710, ext. 201.
KUNA LEMEL the stage play
that almost came here last year
. . . but because of entanglements
never arrived . . . is a definite yes
now . . . It's coming May 30-June
30 . . . to Birmingham Theater, N.
Woodward . . . starring Shelly Be-
rman . . . Might not be a bad idea
to start calling for tickets . . . Good
seats will no doubt go quite fast.
BIG DEAL DEPT. . . . That
breakfast at Remal's (formerly
Alexander's) on Nine Mile Rd.,
east of Coolidge, Oak Park .. .
One egg, two strips of bacon, two
pancakes-, 99 cents . . . Monday-
Friday 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.,
Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 1
p.m. . . . 13 oz. steak dinner at
Ryan's Tavern at Ironwood, W.
Maple, 1/2 mile west of Haggerty,
